Thank you notes?

When should these go out? I thought you had at least 2 months (won't take me that long) but my mom says i should have them done before i go on the honeymoon, since we dont leave til Saturday. When is everyone doing theres?

Re: Thank you notes?

  • i think doing them after your honeymoon is fine. unless you cash a check before then, i would try to get that thank you card out the same day or day after you cash that check.
  • ditto midnite... I would try to get them done as soon as you can, but if you don't get them done before the honeymoon, it's no big deal.  I'm sure a lot of people aren't expecting you to do them before you leave.

  • Etiquette requires that thank you notes are sent within one year of the wedding.  This also holds true to gift giving...guests have up to one year to send a gift.  Therefore, don't feel pressured to send thank you notes if it is going to cause stress before the honeymoon.  The reason to try to get at least some of them out before you leave is just to relieve stress when you come back.  I went to two weddings in March.  I received one thank you card last week, and I haven't gotten the other one yet, so do what works for you.

    I agree!

  • I got a thank-you note 10 months after the wedding once. Keep in mind that I'd flown across the country for this wedding and the thank-you was the first I'd heard from the bride since she left her reception. It was a rude wake-up call that a once-close friendship no longer was...

    Anyway, ditto what midnite said.

  • The one year rule is a misconception, guests have a year to send a gift, you should send thank-yous as soon as possible, 2 months at the latest. I am waiting for my aunt to make us At Home cards before I send mine out so I can include those.

  • Oh don't get me wrong, I think it's a good idea to send them as soon as possible.  People prefer a quick response, in general.  However, I am only suggesting that you balance your stress level, practicality, and good manners in a way that is best for you.  I personally wouldn't get mad at someone who waited 6 months to send a thank you...to me, a thank you is a thank you no matter when it is.  I don't give gifts expecting a thank you card, and I don't judge a friendship solely based on whether they send one or not.  As you can see from our lovely, smart, wonderful, and fabulous May knotties, many people will be hurt if you wait too long to send a thank you, so make sure you get them done as quickly as you can without stressing out.

  • I was also told by two people that etiquette is a year.  I just finished mine yesterday and mailed them out today.  I think everyone knows how busy we are during and after the wedding with the honeymoon and everything.

Waiting until after the honeymoon is fine, but do not wait any longer than 2 months.
