Talk to me people...Night Thread

Re: Talk to me people...Night Thread

  • Meh. The Duggars remind me of a way more extreme Mormon family. Are you sure they hit their kids? It seems to me like they don't....where did you learn all of this about them? I'm not challenging you, I'm really curious.

[QUOTE]Lynda! Haven't seen you in a while.  We went to see a cajun band play at One Eyed Jacks on Saturday, so I thought of you. I also discovered "Skinny Hand Grenades". Dangerous!

Hand Grenades are scary.   Glad you had fun.  We have been laying low. I've been working a lot. It's cutting into my Knot time.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

  • I only believe in spanking if it's a danger situation. I don't know how to term it. Like if they reach for the stove and you have to smack their hand because they are going to hurt themselves. And only if it requires an immediate action and there isn't time to stop them. I don't know if that is necessarily considered spanking then.

  • Quiverfull is definitely NMS.

  • I think it's a sucky situation for any religion to be forced on you, whether that be Duggar style religion or something else.
  • Also, I am not a fan of the Duggars or the Quiverfull mentality, but this is a free country. It's none of my business. I'm much more likely to get outraged by FLDS people marrying 14 year old girls to 57 year old men.

  • Yeah it is a crappy situation to potentially lose your family to do something different, but I don't hate on them for their religious beliefs. They aren't hurting anyone with them and I actually admire their dedication.

I was wondering about you in this discussion. I mean is it as easy as, "If you don't like it, then just leave"? It can't be that simple if that's all you've known right?

  • I never believed in spanking kids until one of the jobs I briefly had where the 3 year old girl was the biggest brat in the world and time out absolutely did not work, nor did taking things away from her. I honestly felt like the only thing to do would be to spank her. Obviously I didn't do that, since she's not my kid.

I saw an article after a "parenting technique" the Duggars recommend was linked to the death of a child. Like it specifies the diameter of the pipe you are supposed to used to hit you kid to minimize bruises or something awful like that.

<div>Well, I watched their specials and such where they discuss blanket training. And, yeah, you hit your kid with a ruler in blanket training. </div><div>
</div><div>Not to sound creepy, but I like to learn about different cults and such. I don't know why but I find it interesting. And so I stumbled upon freejinger.org and lurked there for a few weeks which is where I learned all the stuff about the Duggars. </div>

<div>Agreed. The only way a small kid (like 2 or 3) will learn not to run into the street is when mom/dad spanks them for doing so, they don't know about how dangerous cars can be.</div>

I really think that spanking is never the answer. Can't get a kid to do what you want? Hit them? Yeah. No.

See now I have no problem grabbing them as they start to run off, but if it is already done, I'm not going to spank them for it. It isn't likely they are going to understand or know what the spanking is really for at that age.

Now that I'm thinking of it, the only thing I can think of that relates to my thought is hitting their hand if they are about to touch the stove. I would hope though that I would notice and be able to say something first. I don't believe in spanking as punishment.

  • I would like to think that I'll never, ever spank my kids. Right now, I feel like there is always a better solution. It's hard for me to say never though, since I don't have kids. All I can really say is that I will try my hardest not to spank.
