Wedding Woes

WWYD??

I had blood drawn on Monday.

Come late yesterday and Today it looks like I am a full blown addict.  There are bruises extending all around the diameter of my bicep and up it about 4-5".  I noticed it was a little tender after the draw but just thought I was being a giant wuss.

The tech that drew my blood is a nurse at an ER and does regular IVs but was hired part time at the lab to do stuff which included drawing blood.  I figured it would be a good opportunity as my pain threshhold is high and I have good veins *preening*.

I don't know if it would helpful for me to call and let them know, or whiny.  Yes, I cannot make this decision on my own.

*In other news, my vitatops are coming today and I am going to remind myself not to eat 4 lbs of bakedgoods.  My vitatops are others' girl scout cookies.

Re: WWYD??

  • Do you normally bruise extensively or easily?

A bruise from a blood draw that encircles your arm AND extends up 4-5" is not normal.

  • I'm sure they have already been told that McStabby sucks. Sorry, about you bruises.

  • Was it one blood draw?   Like, were you stuck just once?   That's ridiculous.   I would probably call in a passive-aggressive way and say "I just want to make sure I'm OK - is this normal?   yadayada" when really what you want to say is "yo, your girl jacked me up!"
  • I do think I bruise more easily than I should, but I'm stubborn so I would disagree with him on principle alone.

I don't want to be passive aggressive, is there ANYTHING helpful about me calling?

  • If it was one stick, and just a few tubes of blood that is not normal. I'd call your doctor before calling the lab to complain.

  • I don't think calling will do anything other then to work you up more. They will just ask you if it is serious enough you need to go in and have it looked at and if not then sorry, it happens.

I wouldn't call unless you actually are worried about it.

  • I guess it depends on why you want to call.

If you want to call the lab and let them know what happened, you certainly could and then they would be aware.

If you are concerned that this may turn into a bigger health issue (it gets red, swollen or hot), then I would call my primary or the dr. who ordered the blood work.  They could give you some suggestions on how to treat this and the phone call should be logged into your medical record.

  • Hey, I took my kid in to the doctor because he had a *cough* that I had a bad feeling about and look how that turned out.

You know my answer is to call your doctor, but I'm a worrier.
  • Unless you think it is more than just a bruise, I don't know what they could do for you now....aside from apologize, right?

  • Yeah, I don't think calling will help.  It is weird, though. I've had arterial taps that didn't bruise that badly.

  • i have had bruising. not to the point that it looked like i was murdered, but pretty bad from just one stick for bloodwork. usually it happens when i didn't apply enough pressure after the needle was removed.

i had bad i-was-murdered brusing on both arms when i had several sticks in one day for my gestational diabetes 3 hour test, but that was because it was a whole day process with a handful of blood draws. i'm also slightly anemic.

what do you think calling will accomplish, btw?

i mean, call if you want. no harm in asking if it is normal. i don;t want to come back tomorrow to hear you hemmoraged from an internal bleed, but i have had so many blood tests over the last 2 years that a bruise is a non issue and i woul dnot think about it at all.
  • I want to let the chick know that she did something to cause the bruising.  I don't think it is life threatening for me in any way, I just like to give feedback for performance---but at this point, who the heck knows what happened.

  • I would let them know. I had a nurse tear through my vein which resulted in the same kind of bruising. Actually in my case it wasnt really a bruise, it was blood spilling out under my skin from her tearing the vein. I made sure my doctor knew so they could monitor her and because there was no way she was ever coming near me again. With it on record, I could justify refusing to let her near me and demanding someone else. She did the same thing to a friend of mine as well.
