Bridal Chorus and Wedding March

I'm wondering if these two songs are must haves in the ceremony?

I don't think so.  I had always planned on walking down the aisle to Camille Saint Saen's march from his 1st symphony (beautiful piece if you can find it).

Have them if you like, but more and more people are picking other stuff. I myself am torn. I love tradition but hate the music =0)

I choose to have something by Bach or Beethoven (haven't decided yet) for processional and something light and airy for the recessional... all a personal taste!

No.  You'll still be married without using those two pieces.  I'm a church organist, and play a wide variety of processionals and recessionals.  Some suggestions:

    Suggestions for processional/recessional music

    Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring-Bach

    Air on the G String-Bach

    Sinfonia-Bach

Prelude in C Major from the Well Tempered Clavier-Bach

    Water Music-Handel

Trumpet Voluntary, aka Prince of Denmark’s March-Clarke

    Trumpet Tune-Purcell

    Canon-Pachelbel

    Several of the Brandenburg Concertos-Bach

    Joyful, Joyful-“Finale from Symphony #9-Beethoven

    Claire de Lune-Debussy

    Girl with the Flaxen Hair-Debussy

    Psalm XIX-Marcello

    Toccata in F Major-Buxtehude

    Spring from The Four Seasons-Vivaldi
    Autumn from The Four Seasons-Vivaldi
    Sheep May Safely Graze-Bach
    Fur Elise-Beethoven
Wedding March~Lohengrin (Here Comes the Bride) Wagner

"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146

Although we are probably going to go with something untraditional for ourselves, I can be a fan of the traditional music if it fits the couple and the setting. Although I much prefer Canon in D over the Bridal Chorus. If we chose something traditional it would probably be that. I just can't listen to the Bridal Chorus and not sing "Here comes the bride, all dressed in white" in my head. Its annoying.

Cantique de Jean Racine by Faure is beautiful music as well.  The words aren't exactly wedding-y, but the music is stellar!

I am not using these traditional pieces.  I am using Pachelbel's Canon in D.  I have always wanted to walk down the aisle to this.  It is pretty traditional but not the "wedding march."
