Good morning?

Hi everyone! Happy Saturday. H had to pick up some stuff from his brother's house today (45 min away) and get his haircut so he took off at about 6:30 this morning to get that all done. I wanted to sleep in a little more, so I did.

Anyone else around? What's going on today?

Re: Good morning?

  • Morning!

So I think I missed an update.  Did you officially get the new job?

  • Yes ma'am!! Just got the official offer yesterday. :) I start 11/29!

And then I sat in the office all day yesterday - literally resignation letter in my hand - and my boss called at 4:30 to say he was sick and wasn't coming in. Ha! Nice. So now I have to wait until Monday to quit. LOL! Oh well.
  • Good Morning!  Fi had to leave early for work and even though today is my day to sleep in I woke up when he left and can't fall back to sleep.  I hate it when that happens!

  • AK That is most excellent!  Congrats to you.  Now, send some of that luck my way, will you please?

  • Man, last night's threads really made me fear for the future of brides everywhere... asking for RSVPs on STDs, how to tell your DW guests that they're not actually invited to the ceremony, and I don't want to invite my friend's husband - all in a row. I stopped reading after that third one.

    I'll do my best!! :)

    And thanks! I'm really excited.
  • Congrats AK!

aMrs - how did your pseudo-interview go?

Good morning.  I'm at work this morning.  Ugh.
  • Loopy, that was a freakin joke.  She told me it would only work if I could work something out with H's company to let me ride the ferry for free/mega reduced cost everyday.  They prefer to have the employees live on the island.  And she wasn't sure if it would be two or three days a week and it could change depending on what the Admin Manager had going on....pfft  It would NOT have been better than BK.

  • Dang, aMrs - that sucks. I'm sorry! :(
  • AK, I was reading the Unpopular Opinion thread thhis morning.  I wish people who wished that waitresses got paid more and they didn't ave to tip as much realized what they are asking for.  Australia is a "non-tipping" culture AND they pay the wait staff between $14-$20 an hour.  HOWEVER, this also means that appetizers are between $9-18 each, Entrees start at about $22 and desserts are the same as Apps.  I have never seen a burger for less than $18.  I could easily tip 50% in the states and still pay less for a meal.  We don't eat out much.

Not only that, but if you wrok there and live on the island...they charge you for room and board??!

  • Exactly. I don't know if people realize more wages for the servers would mean more expensive bills, and they'd end up spending pretty much the same amount anyway. If not more.
  • Well hey there!!  Everything I say in my head sounds southern right now because I'm listening to "The Help" in audio book.  I just came back from a walk in the sunshine. YAY!!
  • Good morning, Snippy! No sunshine here today... it's foggy/cloudy - and now that all the leaves are gone it's just grey and dreary. Ahhh November in Michigan.
  • And Australians are very proud of the fact that they pay "a living minimum wage", unlike the US.  Well it is double what the US has, but the COL is also double, so the standard of living for minimum wage employees is exactly the same.  Does it ever get thought out that far?  Nope.

  • Morning Snippy!  It was in the 80s here today, but the humidity was low.  WOHOO!

  • Good Morning gals!  I'm just kind of half way cleaning up around the house.  Trevor is going to the Buckeye game today and I'm staying home with Joce and one of my besties that I haven't seen in a while is coming over.  We'll be watching football and eating Chipotle.  I think it's gonna be a great day!  Well except for the part where I have to drop Trevor off on campus.  YUCK with traffic.
  • I'm jumping in because I am so excited. My best friend had her baby this morning. Unfortunately, she lives an hour away so I'll have to wait until FI gets off work at 1 to go see her and the baby.

    AW moment haha

    But, good morning ladies!
  • Aw - congrats to your friend.  Girl/Boy?  Name?
  • Yaay for new babies!! :)
  • aMrs - sorry to hear that.  At least you tried, right?

I was too late to chime in on the UO thread about the waitstaff wages... I have been waiting tables part time for the past 11 months (not the first time i've done it either) and my "hourly rate" was $3.45 an hour.  I got $10 paychecks after they took taxes and stuff out, every OTHER week.  I worked my last shift last night (YAY - one job again) and was so frustruated. I think every one of my tables had a tip calculator that didn't go higher than 15% :).

We honeymooned it Italy, which is also non-tipping, and food was expensive... I just thought it was that food was expensive in Europe, it didn't even occur to me that the servers' wages (at live-able rates) would bump food prices up.  But the service was great everywhere we went.  Professional, and you could tell they worked well as a team since no one was out to protect their own tips.

  • Morning!  I just popped in to see if anything was going on before we get ready to head out.  We're going down to IKEA.  (My head is spinning just thinking about all the stuff I'm going to look at.)

  • I have to work soon, but I only work 3-4 hours. After I get done we get to go car shopping (yay!) and go clean out my old car at the mechanix (boo!). As much as I hate my car, I'm pissed that it broke on me and I have to get a new one.

See, I'd rather pay YOU the 50% tip than the bumped up food prices.  Plus a good % of the places here, the waitstaff don't even wait on you.  You find your own table,  you go up to the cashier and place your order, pay for it, and they give you a table number.  The wait staff then brings out your food.

  • Wow... that's almost like a buffet.  I usually only tip a dollar or two at a buffet.  Usually all they do is bring me a drink and clear my plate.  But anywhere I sit down and order from someone it's at LEAST 20% if not 25.

  • See the other part of that too, is the higher the wages, the higher the food prices, the less people go out to eat, the less waitstaff is needed, the less hours you get.

In the states I/we went out to eat at least three times a week.  In Europe and here, we maybe go out once a month.

  • Cfas - I didn't get to read most of it until I got home from working at a restaurant last night.  It was a LONG one.

I still haven't gotten to FFF.  Is it worth reading?
  • Hi everyone!  We just got back from vacation last night, so I have a mountain of laundry to do today.  Poor H had to go back to to work today, and then tonight is my 30th bday party!

I envision heaven being similar to IKEA, but without all the other annoying customers. My own personal design playground.
