I think I found my dress...but it was discontinued April 1!

Last week I started trying on dresses, and at my first store there was one that I just loved. She told me that 2 days later the dress would be discontinued. I am NOT one to be pressured into making financial decions; I am not impulsive at all. So I said, "oh well, too bad." I thought I could try on other dresses and find another one that I liked.
Now, I can't get this dress out of my head.
Even though I can't even remember most of the details about it (Like I know that it had a fair amount of beading on it, but I can't remember what kind of material the beading was on! not very helpful, I know!) maybe this dress is becoming like "the one that got away" and so I'm putting it on a pedestal in my mind.
I am going shopping at two more stores tomorrow...but what if I still can't find a dress that I like as much?
I think the lady at the store said that it could still be purchased after April 1, it would just be 25% more expensive. I'm NOT willing to pay that much.
My question is:
This store had taken out the tags of the dresses so you couldn't even see what designer it is, I assume so you can't go buy it somewhere else, do you think if I went in and said, "Look, I'm not going to buy this dress from you for the extra price, so the only way I'm going to buy it is online somewhere. Will you tell me what brand and style # it is?" Do you think they would tell it to me?
(Also, why do some shops take out the tags and others dont?)

  • Yeah, I doubt they're going to give you the designer and style number so you can get it elsewhere. They take out the tags precisely so that you can't do that. It's expensive for them to have brides come in and try stuff on, and then not make a sale.

Any clues about what designer it might be? Like, does the store list the designers it carries on its website? I recall that Maggie Sottero was supposed to be doing a price increase soon, so that may be it. Browse through their website and see if anything looks familiar.

If you can't find it and can't afford it from that store (BTW, if it's a Maggie, they are tightly price-controlled, so it'd be hard to find it cheaper), I'd just keep trying on dresses--you'll find something else you love.
  • Do you have a number for your consultant that day? I went dress shopping alone and then ended up calling up one of the consultant to ask what the designers of my favorite two dresses were so I could show them to my FMIL. She didn't lay out the dress numbers but knowing the designer, I was able to search online and easily find the dresses.

I feel like if you go in telling them you won't purchase the dress with them, they are not going to be willing to be nice to you.

  • Wow that's all interesting to me! When I went dress shopping last weekend at a bridal shop they wrote down the style number and designer for me of the dress that I liked, the dress my mom liked and the dress FI's mom liked, AND the price.

We didn't end up buying there- but we have that info as quick reference if we go back. I ended up buying my dress elsewhere but the moms haven't found anything anywhere else and they loved those.

We just simply asked for the style number before we left so we wouldn't have to go through the process again and it was no problem.

I don't think you need to tell them what you're going to do with it. Just go back in, tell them you love the dress. Ask for the price. When it's so much just say you need to consult with FI for the price, and ask for the info on the dress so it can be found easily next time you come in.

Then do whatever you please with it :)
  • I work at a bridal shop and we allow the girls to see the designer names, take photos of the dresses, etc!
Why don't you go into the dressing room and take a picture of the dress.  then you could post it online here, and maybe I could help you find it.
That's ridiculous they won't help you with this dress.  At our store, we'd do everything possible to make the bride happy.
Could you possibly purchase the dress off of the floor and then have it altered?  Why are they charging more money for a discontinued dress.....that's wrong!
  • ok, I just went to their website and looked through ALL the designers that they had listed, and I'm pretty sure it was one of the Casablanca dresses. (there were a couple from their 2008/2007 collections that seemed a lot like it to me.)
anyone know anything about casablanca dresses? i'll try looking at some of the independent websites that are legit.

  • I really liked the Casablanca dresses I tried on (though ended up going with another designer).  I saw the same Casablanca dress at two shops with $200 difference in price.  I'd find out from the designer's website which shops in your town carry their line, and then visit those to see if they may have the dress available at a more affordable price.  Even if those other shops don't have a sample in stock, as carriers of the line, they should be able to order any Casablanca dress for you.  I was also told by consultants at stores in two differenct states that Casablanca is great about customizing your gown to your preferences, so you can easily change the neckline and embellishments for a bit extra, if you like.  Best wishes!
