In Response to Re: Who should be the new LV mod? : Maybe we should all give our best black jack betting strategy and playing advice so you don't feel so shy?  Also, try to get enough friends/family to take over the table.  It's so much more fun that way and then you aren't stuck with someone who plays bad.
    Posted by mhoneybee
I'll take it!! I've been too shy for craps too, but I've been reading about it, so I'm learning the basics. But I can't wait to be out there with my friends/family for exactly that reason- if we all take over a table, there won't be some awesome person who thinks WE'RE the ones playing badly! :)

Rules I was taught about black jack.  Always spilt aces and 8's because together they are never a winning hand but can be when split.  Never split 10s or face cards because that's just greedy and the odds are not on your side.  If the dealer has anything less than a 7 showing and needs to take a hit and you have a low card, let them take the hit and risk a bust.

I love craps but honestly to make money you need to play the odds behind the bets and it gets to expensive for my taste when within a throw of two you got the pass line and a few numbers and odds all on the table.

Get a cheat sheet for BJ.  It is really the best way for a beginner.

I love craps.  I play the pass (plus odds) and the come until the table is loaded up.  If we are poor, then just the pass and the 6 and 8 but NEVER the Big Six or the Big Eight.  Those are "sucker" bets...like the field but my FI can't stay away from the field.  I do play the hard ways when I throw or if the table is going that way.  I usually play a $2 C&E on the come out.  Casino Royale on the strip has $1 craps (but it requires a $3 pass bet).  I think Binions is the same way.

Oh, and Direy?  Squee indeed.  Oh, and my first fitting for alterations is tomorrow too.

Craziest field better I've ever seen was our wedding trip; this guy was putting anywhere from $100 to $800 on the field, which you'd say wow this guy is crazy, but there were more craps coming out than I'd ever seen in my life.  Before you know it he probably had increased his chip count by four or five times, so one of the bridesmaids was shooting and hitting a lot of 2, 3, 12 and he throws her a $100 chip lol.  Then father in law shoots, same thing.  Finally it gets to me and my wife and we both stink it up.  Dice move to a friend of mine and he starts hitting the same numbers and gets a $100 chip.

I'm pretty much a habitual dollar hard 6 and 8 player and when I'm shooting I always do a two way yo.  If we're at O'Sheas I do the fire bet too just because once one person does the fire bet everyone else at the table gets on it too and gets even more excited if someone makes a point; easy entertainment for a dollar sucker bet lol.

I do like a $2 yo on the come out, but I like it going one way.  ;)

Don't get me wrong, I have seen the field do well, but since it is a one roll bet, it's not great odds.

I had one guy throw blacks across the hard ways when I was throwing and I proceeded to give him a hard 6 and a hard 8.  Bastard just said thank you.

Direy-I'll try to get pictures.  They are weird about it.

    This!

We played some rulette at IP during the wedding weekend and it was a lot of fun and we won a little bit. But I basically was just guessing where to put my bet because I had no idea what was going on.  A local lady was really racking up the chips, it was crazy!

You did just fine; roulette is all guessing.  I do like it when there will be like six reds in a row and someone will dump a ton of money on black because "the odds are black is going to be next."  Sorry but the odds reset with each roll lol.  I think that's why casinos began installing those posts to show you the past ten rolls; whenever there is a streak it gets a bunch of people to bet more than they normally would even though they have the same chance of losing.

This is how I play.  I usually spread out to the 5 or 9 if needed, depending on how the shooter's doing.  I also try to find the loudest table in the casino, because that's usually the table that's winning!

IMO, BJ is too easy to "screw up the table" and roulette is unpredictable (and has terrible odds).  I love that craps is statistics-based.  You have the same chance of rolling a 7 every. single. time.

In Florida the Indian casinos illegally offer blackjack (federal lawsuit ongoing) but for some reason aren't testing their luck and offering craps.  I'd have craps about 20 minutes away if they did; just waiting for it lol.

Vegas... Do you live close to Sarasota/Siesta Key? Husband's best man is getting married on Anna something island in two weeks and I am entirely lost on activities to do. We will be there 4 days. Any input? I know I want to rent a boat, and maybe jet ski, but other than that I'm lost. I can only tan so much. I am all about a Vegas GTG. I will be there Sept 18- 23 and trying extra hard for a terrace suite at the Cosmo for New Years. But if there was a sweet meet up I'd be all about that.

That would probably be Anna Maria island.  No, that's about an hour south of Tampa, but only 30 minutes south of St. Petersburg Beach.  I don't really know Sarasota so I assume there are fun things to do on the beach there, but St. Pete beach has a string of about ten bars in a one mile span starting at the historic Don Cescar resort and heading north; my friends and I make the journey from start to finish a few times a year.

There's a planetarium in Bradenton, about 20 minutes from Sarasota, that does laser shows on Fri/Sat night; Bishop Planetarium I think.  I used to go there when I was in college; everyone would have some drinks and go watch the Doors or whatever they were playing that night.

I think it would be great to have a Vegas GTG but the chances of more than one or two being there at the same time is probably slim. :-(

Vegas GTG would be awesome! I'll  be there at the end of Sept/beginning of October.

Ok so for the gamblers, does it really pay to get one of the club cards from the casinos? Roughly, how much do you need to spend to get free rooms and stuff?

I can be in Vegas anytime for a GTG. I have no life and live close :D

I have club cards everywhere but the only time I get promotions is at Stateline. I hardly spend anything there and I get free rooms anytime I want. But I gamble mostly at Circus  and other MGM properties and have never gotten anything special. I guess I do not spend much comparable to other people, but I have heard from other people that their promotions have gone way down from what they used to offer in the past. Hs aunt gets free rooms at Palazzo, Venetian, MGM, Wynn, and probably anywhere she wants, but she drops at least 5K every time she is there.

Interesting.  I'm guessing they don't offer craps here (at the Indian casinos) because they know the odds aren't in their favor ;)

I would be up for a GTG in Vegas, especially since we need to do a "scouting trip" (eg - Maggiano's and cake tasting trip).  :)

I don't drop enough to get comps (around $300-$500/trip), but I like having a card because I get a room discount deeper than what they usually offer the public.

I got a card for Cosmopolitan recently, and it looks like their rewards may be better than most (stay 7 nights, get 8th free; get points for shopping/staying/eating, not just gambling).  Since we're having our M&G there, I'm hoping we can rack up some easy points :)

I'm all about the players cards. I sign up where ever I play. There won't be instant comps., but if you show some loyalty, you find great deals that will get you back and that will lead into comps. And it's not all about how much you gamble, it's how much you spend at the hotel. You can add the cost of your hotel stay towards your pts, how much you spend on meals, or even shopping.

I'm Platinum status at Caesars properties and I get comp most hotels (Caesars is alittle harder, you have to do be flexible on days). I dont have to wait in line to checkin. I get great deals on upgrades, ($100 for Panorama @PH). I spread the love all over, I just got comp'd at Bellagio for 2 nights, free buffet at Wynn, etc.

Sorry if I always "preach" about signing up for the players cards, but I'm a true believer that they are a way to get something back.
