Especially given that things like that cant really be proven. I didn't study psychology, though, so take that with a grain of salt. To be clear, I'm not personally in favor of spanking but I see that for some kids it may have merits.Posted by LeiselEBYou might want to watch Oprah Winfrey's interview with Geoffrey Canada. Okay, someone correct me if I'm wrong because I was a history major and dont know this stuff inside and out, but isnt it the case that most scientific experiments, studies, whatever mostly never prove anything? But that they offer a new perspective or new theory on a certain topic? This is what I'm trying to say.

  • MK - I'd be terrified to cut my hair that short.  But I have curls.  My hair is shoulder length and H calls me medusa when I go to bed with wet hair and it curls uncontrolled (and ends up bed-headed).

Well you could never publish a paper that says x proves y, but you could run a study and say that "controlling for enviromental factors, there is a clear functional relationship between x and y (when you do x, y happens) or if you drop an object on earth, it falls. Thats why gravity is a theory, because you can't ever proove it in every situation. But there is a lot of compelling evidence that it exists.

<div>It is hard to prove with 100% certainty that spanking does nothing but I know in the CDFR and Psychology fields it is widely taught that spanking does not deter negative behavior and can actually teach to hit when angry, since rarely does a parent spank while calm. </div>

    Hi everyone!

As far as the spanking vs non spanking issue goes, I'm of the belief that if you parent correctly while your child is young, you shouldn't need to spank. If you teach from the beginning that when you say no, that you mean no, your kids tend to not intentionally cross you as much. Whether you do that by spanking (not beating), or by time out, or whatever you choose isn't neccessarily the issue, its that you have to start EARLY, don't wait until your kid is already a brat, and then start trying to beat them.

Also, I was both spanked and beaten when I was a child. There most definitely is a difference between the two, and I remember my childhood changing dramatically when that line was crossed. I remember understanding at a young age that I did something that I wasn't supposed to do, and that was the consequence, and knowing that I was still loved. The feeling that I felt after that was considerably different than the feelings I had being chased around with a board.
