Sweets Reception?

Ok, please give your honest opinions...

If our wedding is on a Sunday at 3 pm (and the ceremony would be about an hour long), would a sweets reception be appropriate? I'm thinking big cake, cookies, candy bar, champagne, punch, and maybe coffees?? Other ideas?

Or would we be better to start the wedding at 2 pm and then the reception would basically start at 3 pm??

Has anyone been to this type of wedding/reception? I haven't, so just wondering how it would go...

Thanks, ladies.

Re: Sweets Reception?

  • I would call that a "cake and punch" reception.  I think that is a good time, 2 pm ceremony, 3-5 pm reception.  Then people will want to leave and go get some real food for dinner.

Perhaps adding some non-sugary foods like fruit and crackers and cheese would be a good move.  It's hard to eat just cookies and candy for 2 hours.
  • I've never been to a reception like that, but I think it would be fine to have the ceremony at 2 or 3 as long as you're aware that people most likely won't stay more than an hour or two at that kind of reception. I would expect people to start to make their way out at around 5 or so, and definitely wouldn't expect people to stay for dancing (If that's part of your vision).
  • I think 2 pm would be a good idea.  If you start at 3, and the wedding lasts an hour then your reception would be starting in the 4:30 - 5:00 time frame, correct?  That would be dinner time.  If you move everything back to 2 pm the sweets would be more appropriate.

Also, I would encourage some non-sweet items like cheese and crackers, crudite, etc.  All sweets will get really old really fast for a lot of people.  A few savory selections would be very welcome.
  • DItto PP.  Start your reception earlier so it doesn't run into dinner time.  You should have some non sweet food items a well like fruit, cheese and crackers because not everyone will or even can eat sweets.  I personally have a sweet tooth but there is a limit to it.

  • I too would add savory selections.  Cheese, crackers, veggie platter would be a good mix in.
  • Ditto to the PPs that suggested some non-sweets options. I mean I love my sweets but I think some cheese and crackers or a fruit/veggie tray is good to have. Plus there might be people like my mom that don't really like sweets so it would be nice to have a snack for them.

I also think 2pm ceremony, 3pm reception is best for this setup. I'd want to get dinner around 5 or 6 probably.
