How to pay your vendors....

What method of payment did you use for your vendors? Credit cards, checks, paypal, cash?

We typically use our credit cards for almost everything day-to-day (paid off every month of course), for both the protection, as well as the rewards. Some vendors (such as our venue) accept credit cards, so it was an easy decision to use credit for them. But for example our photographer said we could pay her in either check or via paypal.

Re: How to pay your vendors....

  • We've written checks to all of our vendors, I think. Definitely venue, photog, bakery, and band got checks.

  • I have different methods for all my vendors. It just depends on my financial situation that month. I work in the restaurant biz so I always have cash on hand. A few deposits I have payed in cash. Others, by check. My dress, CC but payed off. Vendor will probably end up being a CC as well, just because I have no idea what is going to happen of what the final total will be.

  • Credit cards when we could, otherwise checks. Those give you the best paper trail. For vendors that want to be paid day-of in cash, whatever, that's fine.

  • We paid for everything by check simply.

  • Everything was basically paid with my debit card. I think there were maybe two checks written throughout the entire process.

  • We paid as much as we could on a credit card because we got points, but we had the money in the bank already and paid it off every month.  Everything else was by check, tips were obviously in cash.

  • AmEx

for your photographer that asked for paypal - that would just be done with a CC on your end, or a debit from your checking account. same thing, really.

[QUOTE]A friend of a friend paid for their deposit with cheque.  Venue went bankrupt.  They're out like 4k.  Apparently if you do it on your credit card company, the card has some kind of insurance for that.  So, now knowing that if i were getting married again I'd do credit card and then just pay off the balance with the cash I would have paid.

That's scary!  I hope that the Cincinnati Bengals won't go bankrupt.

But seriously, that's something I feel like you could avoid with using reliable vendors, but you can never tell.  Good to know!

ETA:  so far everything has been by check.  Of course the big money won't be flowing out until about 2 months before.
  • I think you should ask if you can pay in Schrute Bucks.

  • We've paid for everything on one credit card, which we try (as best as possible) to keep at a 0 balance.  We found that this was the best way for us, to keep track of what we spend on the wedding.

  • I did a bunch on the AMEX card for the frequent flyer miles & paid it off.  I paid our photog through paypal, which went to my AMEX, because that's the only way he does CCs, which was fine with me.  The venue/catering/bar bill we paid by check.

  • We paid everything in credit card, because if something goes wrong, you can file complaints and possibly (depending on the problem) get your money back.

But the biggest thing we went in with was don't pay cash for ANYTHING.  We always wanted a paper trail, for budgeting and for a safety net.  A check you can stop payment on if someone screws you early enough, but as I said we preferred credit/debit card.  And everyone took them so it worked.

<div>If you use Paypal you can still pay through a CC. I prefer to pay via CC for the points and I just feel it's safer. </div>

  • So far checks, but always make sure to make copies if necessary and ALWAYS get a reciept.

  • Checks. We put our wedding bands on a cc and are paying it off. That was the only debt we went into for the wedding without blowing all of our savings.
  • We paid for most things with CC for the points/cashback.

I would ask for a discount if they take CC and check and you pay with a check. CC's take some of the money you are paying the vendor and a lot will pass the savings along to you. Our DJ did this when we paid the balance in full when we booked. Of course now I am worried that he is not going to show up or something.

I've heard about the discount with cash because, well, they don't have to claim cash on their taxes since there's no paper trail. But then, you would have to use cash.

  • We would have loved to pay for things with credit cards but none of my major vendors accept them, or if they do they charge a fee for it.  So for the most part, it's checks.  My venue requires me to give them a certified check.
