I want to send my Save-the-Dates 10 months in advanced. Is that ok?

I am getting married January 29, 2011, and I would like to send out our Save-the-Date cards mid-March.  I know it's earlier than 'standard' but we didn't put out an official engagement notice or have an engagement party.  We have lots of people asking us about our date, and want to give them the information as soon as we can.  We are also excited to share the news of our date!
What do you think?

  • I think it's fine.  Just be very, very sure of your guest list - once you send an STD, you have to send an invite.

  • I wouldn't do it.  Our guest list changed a lot between 10 months and 6 months out (when we sent our STDs).  There are always going to be lots of people asking when the big day is early in your engagement, especially if you recently picked the date.  Word will filter through to most people, usually the most important ones, anyway.  If anyone absolutely has to know, they'll contact you.  You could also send out an email.

If you do send them, pick carefully. As PP said, STD= invite, no backing out.

  • I have to agree with swim1011 - I think it's too early.  6 months is standard, 8 if it's a destination wedding or on a major holiday.  Most people don't make plans 10 months in advance, and my concern would be that your guests would misplace their STD and end up forgetting all about your wedding by the time they got around to making plans for that time of the year.  Which defeats the whole purpose of sending a STD!  I know you're eager to get started, I remember the feeling, but I would wait a little longer.
  • I think it's fine as long as you only send the STDs to people you are 100% sure you will invite.
  • Really, the recommended timeline is no more than a year out, and no less than 6 months.

My understanding is that 9-12 months is really only for DWs or holiday weekends, though.

I'm getting married in October and I'm sending mine out in a few weeks!

OP, can you hold off a month? Also, do you have everyone's address? It has seriously taken me 3 months+ to track down addresses.

  • I sent out my save the dates 9 months in advance. We are getting married a couple hours away in cape may, nj. The month were getting married is typically very busy in cape may. I wanted people to know ahead of time where the wedding was and if you wanted to stay the night, its best to book asap!

As long as your sure on your guest list, i think its fine.

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone!  I think I am going to hold off until the end of this month, - so I'll be sending them out 9 months in advanced.  Yeah getting the addresses together does take a while...
    thanks again! :)
