NWR: Flat irons

I want a new flat iron for Christmas. Anyone have any recommendations?

Re: NWR: Flat irons

  • I have a Chi.  Its lasted 3 years so far and worth every penny to me.  If it ever breaks I'll buy another one in a heartbeat.
  • I agree that buying a CHI is your best bet.

  • Mine is a brand called Hot Tools Professional.  I got it at a supply store that you need a license for (gotta love my 2 aunts who have them and get me great deals), but I'm pretty sure they sell them at Sally's too.  I love mine and have had it for over a year.  I think it makes a difference what kind you get too.  My first one was from the same company but was the thicker one with a lot more plastic.  This one is really small, I think its a half inch size, and its really thin and it works great.

I will say though that I don't have a ton that I need my flat iron to do, so I can't really speak for someone who goes from really curly or wavy hair to straight.  Mine is naturally straight, but the underneath layers have become wavy as I've gotten older, so I need it for that.  Also I'm lazy and don't use a brush as I blow dry, so I use it to smooth the whole look and curl the ends under.

  • I've been thinking about getting an InStyler, but I'm not sure about it. Has anyone ever used one or know someone who has? It's the rotating barrel iron.
  • I bought 2 CHIs (a black one, and then a red one when that one died). They were good, but not great.

I recently bought a baybliss (sp?) and LOVE it. I have crazy frizzy hair and it works like a dream.

  • CHI.  I've had a bunch of different ones, and that one is by far the best, and worth every penny.

  • Well, sounds like I'll be going with a chi.
  • I have a CHI, and a Remington that I got at Walmart that said "compare to the CHI" (which clearly I decided to do.) I think the Remington actually gets hotter and does more.

My hairdresser told me to get rid of my CHI and look for one that gets up to 450+ degrees, so I too am on the hunt for a new one. I think the one I found on Amazon is called a "croc" and has great reviews.

I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

  • I'll go a different route. I have a cheap one from Target, which was like $20 two years ago.  I have extremely thick hair and it's very curly/frizzy, so I like flat irons that get warm quickly and stay warm.  I also tend to not like the really thin ones.

My mom's friend has been my hair stylist since I was little.  Last time she came to visit my mom, I asked her to help me straighten the back of my hair and she was really impressed with the flat iron, even compared to her professional ones.

This is the one I use: http://tinyurl.com/28s6e36.

  • I totally recommend getting a CHI. Before buying mine I went through a few different flat irons and none of them worked half as well as my CHI.  I have had it for years and it works just as well as the day I bought it.

  • i love, love, love my chi!!!!!  i have naturally curly hair and it straightens it so easily.  it is by far the best flat iron i have ever had and it has lasted longer than any i've ever had too.  i think it is totally worth it.  everyone i know who has one swears by them too.

  • I use a Solia (black with Blue Tourmaline). I have used this iron for the past 2 years and it's still kickin' effing amazing. I have also used a Sedu which is great too, but more expensive than a Solia.

Shop around at www.folica.com and see what you can find. I think that they have a compare feature where you can look at different irons and compare their stats and things like that. I do all my shopping for styling tools there just because they are pretty awesome in price and offer free shipping frequently.

  • I love my Chi but I have pretty straight hair naturally, just use the chi to smooth everything over

  • I have a Solia and I LOVE it!  I was set on buying a CHI, since that's what everybody else has, but the reviews on www.folica.com were way better for the Solia than for any of the CHIs.

  • From a stylist's standpoint, get a good one, but keep it clean and don't let it chip. You can spend $100 but you have to keep it clean. The best one I ever used in the salon was a Hott Tools, which is mid-point for pro tools.

  • I use a CHI.  My old stylist used to use a GHD, which is also amazing but considerably more expensive.

Speaking of price, PSA: my FI got my CHI at Costco for considerably cheaper ($70) than anywhere else I've seen.  YMMV, because Costco doesn't always carry them.

  • I love the CHI flat rion when I want straight hair.  Just as important though is to make sure you have the right product to keep your hair from getting damaged.  I use Aveda's brilliant cream mixed with Smooth Infusion.
