audible.com?

Do any of you guys use audible.com?

I want some audio books for my drive to Florida, but itunes is way too expensive. With audible, do you buy the membership AND buy the books, or is it just the membership? I can't seem to find the info on their site.

Re: audible.com?

  • I have no experience with the site but have you checked your local library?  My library has a ton of audiobooks to download from Overdrive.  Plus it's free!
  • I joined for free once to get a free copy of Samuel L Jackson reading "Go the F*ck to Sleep", but get emails from them all the time offering me free books. So I'm guessing you pay for the books.

  • You buy a membership and they give you credits every month. The different monthly fee memberships get you x number of credits per month. 1 credit usually equals one book. This usually equates to you paying less money for the book than just buying it flat out as the cost of a monthly credit is usually less than the cost of the book. However, if you have no more credits available, you can still buy the book at full price. Does that makes sense?

I had audible but I found I wasn't using the credits fast enough and they only let you keep about 4-6 at one time. It wasn't worth it for me, but it could be worth it if you listen to audiobooks all the time. If you cancel your membership, I think you can still purchase books at regular price, but I'm not positive about that. It's through Amazon, as a side note.
