Autumn's Appt

He made an initial diagnosis of atypical absense seizures. Atypical because she does this lip smacking thing during the seizures. He induced one by having her blow on and watch a pinwheel. It made me sad to see her slip into that. We have an EEG appointment on the 16th to confirm.

It's genetic, probably from my side since he seemed interested in my migraines and my little sister having a type of seizure when she was younger.

She will have to go on medication for it and stay on it for about 2 years. After that she will be retested and should have grown out of it. The meds will prevent them but if she has a growth spurt (it's dosed based on weight) or we miss a dose she could have one occasionally. It shouldn't progress into grand mal seizures since it started so young. This assumes the first medicine we try works and doesn't have any side effects.

He says without meds it would get worse and the seizures would eventually take a toll. Also she would have trouble learning because she has them so often. Probably up to 100 times a day. We just don't notice them all and since she doesn't remember those chunks of time she doesn't notice them either.  The meds may make her seem hyper but it's just returning to normal. Each seizure is such a workout for the brain that she is probably more tired than she would be.

Until after her appt and after she gets on medicine she can't ride a bike, swim or play in the bathtub alone. Basically anything that could be dangerous should she have a seizure because they just paralyze her.

I held it together in the doctors office but kind of lost it in the car. I worry about her not learning or feeling different because she has to take a medicne. I worry that it's my stupid genes fault that she has this or that the doctor is wrong and she will have a more serious form of epilepsy later. Hormones + something wrong with my baby=hot mess. Of course I didn't let her see any of this.

Anyway, I guess we just deal with it as it comes and hopefully we find the right medication to start off with.

And omg, Ww. I lost it again reading that. Boo x a million for today.

*sigh* Poor Autumn. I'm really glad it sounds treatable and hopefully it will go away on its own.

I think we've had enough of today today.

It sounds like you got a pretty good prognosis, given the options. I hope the medication works quickly and completely.

You cannot start blaming your genes, douchefaces genes. At this point you just move forward. What time will she need to take her medicine? If it's in the morning no other kids will even know she takes medicine. Besides, I am willing to bet you there will be at least a few kids on ADD/ADHD medicine, so she won't be alone. She's going to be fine, and you're doing the right thing. So many kids grow out of this, and with the well baby visits you'll be going to it will work out and you can just schedule well-Autumn visits the same days. Her teachers will be equipped to work with her, and she's an extremely smart and happy young girl. This will only be as big a deal to her as you make it, but you know that. Let her know she'll grow out of it, and that the medicine will make sure of that. You are a good mom.

So glad she was able to be seen quickly and get a plan in place. I hope the EEG gives a full picture and the medications work from the get go.

Well I'm glad she got a diagnosis. I know you're scared, but at least now you have a path to her getting and feeling better.

As scary as this is it sounds treatable and possibly not forever.  Hopefully the meds start working soon and she can get used to a seizure free life.  Big hugs and prayers for Autumn and you.

Candi, of course you lost it, but it does sound like you are on top of this and have a good prognosis for the future. Hang in there, and give her a big hug from us.

Thanks everyone. I still am getting choked up about it, that's my baby. H too. He's like "This is a boo-boo that I can't fix for her :("

I don't think she will have an issue with the meds. She does take a vitamin, we can just add this in.

I was telling H that I'm worried because she is SO smart and she's used to catching onto things really quickly and I'm scared this will hold her back. Of course, if the medicine works, it won't.

I'll keep you guys updated. :)

I totally lost my train of thought with my last post. Adurr.

Anyway, this makes so many things make sense. Why sometimes she chokes when just drinking water or something. Doc says she is probably having one and since you brain tells you to swallow etc and her brain is on pause she stops and it chokes her.

Or why it takes her so long to do things lately. If she's getting stopped that often she may forget what she's doing. She did tell him that sometimes she doesn't remember what happened.

Candi, I'm so sorry.  Autumn is lucky to have such a good mom who caught this early and is getting her the treatment she needs.  I'm glad that her prognosis sounds really, really good, but I'm sorry that you have to go through the worry and stress.  That sucks.

It sounds like an answer and a treatment are the best news you could have possibly received.  I'm sorry you and Autumn have to go through this, but taking medicine might just make her cool, not different, at school.  ((hugs))
