NWR: What would E do?

Hi ladies, thanks for all your help in advance.

In May I moved from South Carolina to Maryland, and after months of looking, I finally got a job at McDonald's at the end of July. Things hadn't been going so great, and on a low night I updated my résumé and posted it to careerbuilder. Yesterday I recieved a call from Aflac saying they had seen my résumé and wanted to schedule an interview. Today was my day off, and interview. It's a well-known company, and although it's commissioned, they seem to be making money hand over fist. So I'm tempted to accept their offer and leave McDonald's.

Except that I've also applied at the local library for a cirrculation desk opening, and haven't heard anything back. I've applied to this library before, and it took them almost a month to respond with "no thank you". But libraries are the field I want to go in.

So now I'm wondering if I should take the Aflac job and quit McDonald's, or wait until the library calls back. But if I take the Aflac job, and then get the nod from the library, I don't want to look bad on paper by having two jobs back to back in less than a few months.

So ladies, what would E do?

(Also, I apologize for all the NWR stuff from me lately. Y'all seem the best source for unbiased opinions. :) )

Re: NWR: What would E do?

  • When did you apply for the library position?  I think if its been a week, it would be ok to call them and say you were following up on your application.
  • Where in Maryland?  I am and still live in Harford County so if you are near there and have any questions about the area just let me know.

As far as the job goes...are you full-time or part-time at McD's?  If part time, I would take the job with Aflac and then continue working part-time at McD's.

But before you do that, if you decide to do that, call the library and ask about the status of the position.  That could help make your decision easier.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about looking like a job-jumper.  If you're applying in the library field, you don't need to put McDonalds on your resume, unless you're filling out an application which asks for every job you've worked.

There's a point in your career where you stop listing jobs that aren't applicable on your resume.  I don't list that I assistant managed a Wet Seal back in 2005 or that lazer tag place I worked at for 3 months in 2003 anymore.

  • It's been a week since I applied for the library position.

Would it? I don't want to seem desperate (though I'd really like this job) or pushy.

My fiancé works for the regional library, and has to deal with the library I applied to on a daily basis, and says that things there are very unorganized. So I wasn't expecting a quick reply.
  • Go on the website http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Aflac-Reviews-E1302.htm

Only 40% of employees would recommend the company to a friend.

Being an agent with your only salary as 100% commission is definitely a very stressful job. If you take a day off or are sick, you make no money. If you have a bad day, you make zero money for HOURS of work.
  • One week is a good time to check on the status of your application.

I would definitely take Aflac over McD's.

  • I handle the HR in my company. It's fine to call after a week and make sure they received your resume, etc. If you called the next day I probably wouldn't be impressed but a week is fine.

  • @Maggie: I live on the Eastern Shore in Salisbury. But thank you for the offer. Technically I'm working part-time because I'm only working 35-ish hours a week. But it's 5 or so 8 hour shifts with two off days. I consider that full time.

I work day shift (7-3 or 8-4 usually) and I don't think that would work with having to call and visit businesses. Plus I start school in two weeks, which limits my time further.

@MyUserName: Well, currently I only have three jobs on my résumé (including McDonald's), and most applications I've seen ask for all employment history. You make a good point however, and once I have more entries I probably won't include everything unless asked.
  • @itzMS: Thanks for that link. I looked up the local reviews, and most said that the upper employees take cuts and credit for things the under employees do. I couldn't deal with that. At least at McDonald's the management is fair.

@et. al.: I'll be calling the library tomorrow to check on my application. Glad to know what the proper wait time for a follow up is. Thanks!

Then I would stick with McD's since you will be going to school as well as working.  Like a PP saic, Aflac is 100% commission and do you really want that stress on you while you are going to school?

And the only reason McD's is keeping you right below full-time is so that they won't have to provide you with benefits and most likely a full-time salary.

</span></div><div><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:12px;background-color:#ffffff;">You make an excellent point. And I'm perfectly happy with the part-time hours I already have, so they can keep their benefits. Wouldn't mind the full time pay though ;)</span></div>
  • Thank you ladies for all your help. I will be calling Aflac tomorrow, as well as the library. I believe I'll stick with McDonald's a bit longer while I wait for the library.
  • Sorry I couldn't resist.  At my old job managing the family restaurant we had to run AFLAC out on a weekly basis.  They would come in at the worst times and just stop employees and start talking to them.  It's not good to stop a waitress in mid-stride, well unless she is your waitress.  Anyhow one day they found out where my office was and told me that the owner sent them over and I was supposed to set up a meeting with my staff which was 75+ ppl so they could present them with the AFLAC insurance.  I did it and out of all of those ppl 2 signed up.  And I got my arse chewed for bringing everyone in for that meeting.  Apparently they did not speak to the owner.  I thought it was backhanded, and I could not ever work for someone who had to be that sneaky.  I will admit I should have asked the owner about it, but I didn't.  Stay with McD's, and keep banging on the library door.  That is cool you want to be a libraryian.  <-----I know I spelled that wrong, I also can't use a card catalog.

  • My ex actually tried working for Aflac and it cost us money in the long run.  You have to sign up for the insurance they provide, buy your own materials, cold call companies and try to build your own business.  It was hell for the 2-3 months he tried this.  They will show you info that says you can $$$ but not many do make that money.  Stay at McD's, go to school, look into work study programs there, keep looking for the perfect library job.  Good Luck!
