Ganache covered wedding cake?

I don't like the idea of fondant.
I've never tasted it but everyone I know that has said it was disgusting.
I admit that fondant cakes are really cool and the things people do with them is incredible. But it's not for me/my fiance.
I want the cake to look like a cake... a really yummy dessert... not the type of cake where it looks like something and then you cut into it and it's like "wow?! that was a cake?!" [does that make sense? I mean I want to focus on the fact that it looks like food... not see what I can do with the decorations.]

So we were thinking we'd get it covered in white chocolate ganache.
Because ganache is delicious.

Have any of you had a ganache covered cake? [white/dark/normal chocolate]

I haven't found many photos of them... usually only as a filling. But I've found a few caterers that are willing to make it that way!

Also... can you put buttercream under ganache? Or is it only possible for the cake to be covered with ganache by itself?

If you were a guest... would you like the idea of a ganache covered cake?

Sounds yummy!! I'd certainly enjoy that cake. I an not sure about buttercream under the ganache so that's definitely something to ask your baker! Fun idea!

I LOVE ganache, typically not a white chocolate fan though.  I think it is definitely a neat idea.

I have worked with ganache as a frosting for cakes before and I don't think it would work over buttercream. Ganache has to be poured and shaped very quickly, in a matter of seconds before it holds its form.  Buttercream melts.  So I would imagine it is not possible, but check with your baker.

If you are leaning towards that because you want smooth, perfect lines, talk to your baker and see their portfolio. FI was set on fondant because he wanted smooth frosting and sharp corners.  We realized a lot of cakes that we thought were done with fondant were actually buttercream.

I have never liked fondant, but I had a piece of birthday cake the other day, it was chocolate, filled with a creamy filling, and covered in buttercream, then thin fondant. The fondant was really yummy, I can't explain why, not as sweet and chewy as usual?

I have heard the bakers will let you taste their fondant, as each bakers is different.

I have never poured ganache before... mine has always been more like a frosting? If you want to you could get your baker to make a white chocolate truffle champagne buttercream... if you want to get extravagant!

It sounds yummy!!! I would agree with the buttercream being melty. I would just stick with the ganache.

Ganache is poured over a cake.  It does not work as a "covering" over buttercream.

Yes! Ganache can cover buttercream. Take a look at this photo I attached... I made this "Tripe Chocolate Cake" Chocolate cake, Buttercream, Chocolate Ganache..

This cake is usually a hit, but keep in mind the ganache can be really rich and many people will only eat a little piece...
