Programs for bilingual ceremony

Greetings,

My partner & I are from two different cultural backgrounds.  He is still relatively new to Canada and most of his side don't speak English.  No one on my side speaks Spanish.  Our ceremony is going to be a mix of both languages and the officiant is going to loosly translate as she switches back and forth.  However, we don't want to go through the entire ceremony in both languages so there will be some portions & readings in one language or the other, not both.

I'm trying to figure out where the ceremony program will fit into this.  Should we provide written translations to the portions that won't be translated during the ceremony?  Just keep it super simple with names of particpants and order of ceremony, and forget about the langauge issues?  Any thoughts?

Gracias & thanks!

Re: Programs for bilingual ceremony

  • Please provide full translations for any readings. You might just want to put the script in both languages for each reading to avoid any confusion.

For exchange of rings, vows, and unity ceremony (if you're doing one), I don't think you need to provide a script, but the officiant should announce in both languages what is about to happen before it is going to happen.
  • I think that I would provide a full translation of anything that won't be translated during the ceremony into the other language.

Also, I do think that I would list in both languages the order of the ceremony and have your officiant and an interpreter, if necessary, announce each portion as it arises so everyone knows what is happening.
  • I just had a bilingual ceremony German/English. I didn't provide any translations in the program but we didn't have any readings done. We used a traditional ceremony so people knew what was going on.
