How long can I reasonably wait to order MOB dress?

Hi there! My daughter is getting married Sept. 8, 2012, and we are having a blast planning, preparing etc. ... I have been steadily losing weight for the past few months and would like to hold off as long as possible on ordering my dress for the occasion.

The store said six to eight weeks out is fine to get it here in time for alerations. Does that seem correct? Realistically, in that amount of time I'd only lose maybe 10 or 15 lbs between ordering and the wedding and I'm thinking that would be pretty easy to accomodate with alterations. So what do you think is my last possible date to order if I allow my alterations gal (who knows to save time for my dress) a week? July 1? Maybe a bit sooner? I just don't want to order too late but want to give as much time for weight loss as possible.

I would give yourself at least a on week buffer from the time the store says you need to order.  Things happen, shipments can be delayed.

My mom ordered her MOB dress in late May last year for my late July wedding. It came in at the beginning of July, and she had her final fitting just a few days before my wedding. She cut it too close for comfort she said. I would probably allow at least 8 weeks for the dress to arrive (err on the longer side) and then at least a couple weeks for alterations (you may need more than one fitting to get it right). If I were you, I'd probably order mid-June at the latest.

Thanks, ladies ... I think mid-June is probably best. And if things go REALLY well and it needs to be taken in A LOT, the styles I'm looking at shouldn't be too tough to alter. (I have it narrowed down to a few that are all very similar.) Not sure why I'm worrying about my appearance since all eyes will be on my beautiful daughter, but I don't want to look frumpy in the family photos! LOL!

Congrats on everything!  I'm a 3 time MOB and planning with my girls was indeed a blast and we were so happy with the results.

Congrats on your weight loss too!  That is an accomplishment that is eluding me right now but I will get back on the bandwagon. (I hope)

I think you are best to err on the side of caution when ordering.  Any chance of sharing a pic of your dress?

Thanks, KMMSSG ... it's been a long, long haul on the weight thing. And I don't exepct to meet my goal by the wedding but will be close.

I will share a photo once I choose it for certain! LOL! I have it narrowed down to about five and need to go try them on. (They are in my favorites.) We live in a TINY town in South Dakota with very limited shopping, so I have to travel two to four hours to shop where they carry those brands and have really much of anything to actually try on. Can you even imagine??? I plan on going this next week to try a few on and then again in a couple more weeks.

Good luck in your adventure.  I look forward to seeing what you choose.

I live within 45 minutes of great shopping but here in michigan we have the upper peninsula which sounds a bit like SD.  I tease a friend of mine from up there because the nearest Applebee's is more than 2 hours from his house.  Happy Shopping!!

LOL, well we DO have an Applebee's. And we do have two bridal shops, BUT they have next to nothing for MOB dresses. And judging from what the DO have, they must think women around here don't get married until they are 40 and their mothers must be 80! FRUMPY! LOL! I will find something in Sioux Falls, Fargo or maybe Minneapolis. It's a good excuse for a little road trip!

Does the dress have to be pre-ordered from a specific shop? Like, is it set in stone which one it has to be? I ask because bridal shops have a tendency to be a) overcautious with timelines and b) pushy. If you find a great little off-the-rack number, however, and have a decent seamstress, it can be ready in half the time the boutiques push for. My mum found a super dress from a little independent retailer specialising in one-of-a-kind local designers. It needed minor alteration and looks smashing on her.

.Excellent idea, thousand ... I will keep that in mind. Definitely if I find the right dress in the size/color we're after, that'd be WONDERFUL! (I'm leaning toward a chocolate-y or maybe even a copper-y brown.)

Tried a few on today at the shop where my daughter got her gown; going to another shop tomorrow, about 45 minutes away. Get this ... it's in a town of 500! But reportedly it has a HUGE inventory! Cross your fingers!

All eyes may be on your daughter but I'm sure people will notice you as well. Both my mother and MIL wore lovely dresses when I got married last August and people still mention to me how great they thought both women looked (which made both of them feel great!)
