[QUOTE]How much of his law degree did he do? It just depresses me that it is so hard to pay out of pocket for some summer classes because if I took 2 credits this summer, I could really lighten my load next fall since I could take 5 classes instead 6, which crushes my spirit and liveliness. hah.

<div>He had 18 credits left, he thinks. Enough that he felt he couldn't do it in one semester at least. But yeah, he was pretty close.</div>

I like where he goes off to write that new hit song, "Alone in my Principles".
  • Also holy crap, one semester of law school (I'm assuming it's the same as far as average credit hours go, maybe a little higher?) would cost the same as what my BS will.

So glad I don't want to be a lawyer.
  • Aw man, Any, for being THAT close i would totally go back, but I'm not him. Why did he leave in the first place (if you don't mind me asking)?

Daff you are never too old. I have several classmates that are 45+.

  • Really though? Is it reasonable to drop one's life in your midthirties with no funds to pay for school so go into that much debt without bringing in an income, only to find probably there aren't that many entry level law jobs out there? That was sort of my impression of the reality, without knowing too much about it.

<div>One, his whackadoodle ex girlfriend was stalking him (she went to the same law school) and he wasn't in a terribly good place, so he moved back home. He also knew he didn't want to practice law, so it felt like a waste of money to him. What he's doing now, the law background definitely helps, and isn't a requirement, so he still feels like he's using it. Depending on his future job situation, I think he wants to go back and do some kind of engineering degree.</div><div>
</div><div>Also holy goddamn crap. That's a lot of money. </div>

No you are likely right. I mean, I just was saying that age wise, I've seen a huge variety in who is in law school. I'm guessing a lot of the older students got out of their career because they really didn't like whatever they were doing, enough to take out loans. You are an engineer right (or am I making that up?)? I do know that science backgrounds for law students will probably have more job opportunities afterward because there are much fewer eligible people for those positions.

Ah ok, gotcha. Engineering is no joke either. I don't know how J does it.

  • Hola, ladies!

Musu, I was just checking out my summer options for school too.  But if I had to pay $1500 per credit, I think I'd cry.  I know I would, actually.  I think mine is like $1500 per three credits, for summer classes.  Still expensive to pay outright, but not nearly as bad as yours.  But you're going to make a lot more than I do when you're done.

    Happy early birthday, Bree!

Yeah I think the only reason they can get away with it is because of the salary future. But at the same time, employers probably hire with the knowledge that their associates need to pay of those damn loans. Honestly though, I do think legal fees are reasonable (provided the lawyer is diligently working for the client), given the workload.

  • Lol, the school I'm going to in the fall is $169.50 per credit hour. Even U of A is only $196.26.
  • hi bay! hi LDY! Let's go to law school together.

Engineering backgrounds are highly sought after for intellectual property law, especially with patents. In fact, you have to have a science bachelor degree in order to even practice, I think. And that area of law is only growing with technology.

  • Hi Daff!  I <3 you and all, but you and LDY will have to join Musu in law school without me.  I'm having enough trouble just getting a history M.A.

And Musu -- yeah, I 100% agree with you.  For that kind of money and that kind of effort you need to put into getting a degree, you deserve to be paid for it.

    Do they give scholarships? :)
  • The firm that I'm interning for during this semester, bills $150 per hour for law clerks. I think that is pretty average for a small but successful firm.

A lot of schools probably do have some sort of scholarship for science backgrounds. Not full rides, but ya know.

  • I had a 53 year old medical student in my clinic a few months ago.  Now there's a motivated person.
  • All this talk of law school is making me jealous. I decided too late in the game that I wanted to go, and couldn't get my GPA to a stellar place, and I didn't do well enough on the LSAT to make it worth applying. I think sometimes about trying to re-take it and see if I could make it happen... but it's not really like the ACT where you just re-take it until you do well, haha.
    image
  • It definitely is, Mica! There is a woman in my classes that can't be younger than 55.
    image
  • MuSu, what kind of law are you/do you want to study/practice?
    image
  • My medical student had a daughter who was pre-med.
  • That's awesome, Mica.

I have a guy in one of my classes who is in his 70s and trying to get his M.A.   I think that's pretty awesome.

  • Snail, I am most interested in children's issues, and family law. I have a boutique interest in animal law but it is so small of a sect of law, that it would be something to do on the side, not as a main practice.

  • I do NOT want to go to law school.

A friend of mine is going to med school next year.

My Cabo tan is fading fast, and that makes me sad :(.  But not sad enough to go bake in a tanning bed to try to prolong it.
