Quick Question about Guest Lists

Quick summary, FMIL is hosting an engagement party *hooray* but invited people I don't think will be invited to wedding *booo* because her friends insisted it was ok. FI and I are paying for wedding ourselves (FMIL offered to pay for her guests but we are declining because she will want to monopolize everything)... so... my question is are FI and I now stuck inviting all these people to wedding?

Re: Quick Question about Guest Lists

  • I don't think so.  It's her mistake not yours and it will reflect badly on her.  Especially since her friends know she's making this faux pas.

  • I would express this concern to your FMIL quite clearly if you haven't already.  I'm fearful that down the road she'll try to squeeze them back on to your guest list and offer to pay.  Have you selected a reception site?  Are there capacity restrictions?  It is generally in poor taste to invite people to an engagement party, shower, etc. who aren't invited to the main event.  But sounds like you may not have much of a say if she's the host of the engagement party...

I suppose if it plays out that these friends do get invited to the engagement party, just keep actually wedding day talk to a minimum and if comments/questions come up about it with people who may not be invited, just let them know you're still in the early stages of planning or that you're looking to do something intimate...
  • This is exactly why I turned down my FMIL's offer to throw an engagement party.  I knew she would end up inviting a ton of people before we had nailed down the guest list and didn't want to be stuck between either committing a faux pas by not inviting them to the wedding or having to invite extra people I didn't want to the wedding.

Ditto PP about telling your concerns to your FMIL.
