Entertaining ankle-biters

I'm excited to have a handful of really cool kids at our outdoor lakeside wedding.  Any ideas (besides the standard coloring book) to keep them quiet and happy during the ceremony and/or reception?

Re: Entertaining ankle-biters

  • I am in the process of making heart shaped crayons with a heart mold I bought at Michael's and I bought them a huge coloring book that I am going to but the pages out of.

  • Bubbles and chalk. Maybe some cards. Wufflle Ball set.
  • Reception you could hire a childrens entertainer. A clown/face painter/balloon maker. Or a magician.
  • OOH!  I like the I Spy!  Maybe the older kids (12 year old) can referee such a thing.  Thanks!

What else ya got?  I think there's about 6 kids between 4 and 7, and an 11, 13, 14 and 16 year old.
  • I would only really be concerned with the 4 and maybe 7 year old.  The 11, 13, 14 and 16 year old should be able to hold it togetheer for an hour (or less).  Or shove 20 bucks the way of the oldest to escort the younger two out if need be.  The way I see if 11 and up are no longer "ankle biters" - but i'm short :)
  • If the ceremony is a typical short ceremony, they'll be fine sitting with their parents.  As for the reception, have some outdoor games type activities, but mostly let them enjoy the party like everyone else.  Really~when you were a kid, and everyone else was eating, laughing, dancing, would you have wanted to sit with a coloring book and  heart shaped crayons?

I teach preschool.  The answer is no, they wouldn't.  They'll be outside.  They'll want to be moving around.  Have some balls, bubbles, toys, balloons, etc.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • 14 and 16 years olds are ankle biters??  Really???

Personally I would not worry about it.  Only the 4 year old might need to be entertained.  The others are old even not to need anything special.  They attend school so they understand what's appropriate and not.

As a 14 or 16 year old I would NOT referee an I-spy game and be kind of pissed you want be to babysit the younger one..

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
