too short??

i ordered my dress back in october... it arrived in february. we havent paid the remainder of the balance on the dress (we'll pay it when we start alterations), but i did go to try it on...

it doesnt have that "wow" factor... probably due largely to the fact that i gained a little weight since i ordered it. also... the dress didnt fit me when i tried it on, so now iim able to see my dress, in a size that fits me, and, eh. i dont know. im super worried. i've made it a point to start working out, and i'm on a slow but at least present diet. hopefully it'll start looking like my wedding dress soon enough.

reason for my post: the dress isn't to the floor. im pretty tall, and i dont think the dress shop countered that in when ordering my dress. i know its not the end of the world, and in fact probably better that it doesnt drag on the floor... but arent long dresses with trains supposed to be on the floor?? its a one time wear for me... so im not SUPER concerned about it getting really dirty. i dunno... am i being silly? i've always had that "tall girl complex"... jeans being too short, etc. so maybe i AM being silly. but... siigh. is it something i should bring up? because its noticeably off the floor. like... i'd say 3 inches or so. before heels.

Re: too short??

  • Can you share a picture of your dress?  Ideally, yes, your dress should just float above the ground but depending on the style, it isn't too difficult for the hem to be extended with a layer / lace of some sort.  Also, as you lose weight, you may gain some length, too, but it sounds like you should have had a longer gown ordered.  Talk to your store about the length, and if they don't agree to reorder so the length is right, take it to an expert on alterations to see what can be done.

  • It should be floor length.  Yes, I was going to recommend lace too.  Or dropping the hem or waist, depending on the design of the dress.
  • As PP have said it should touch the floor. You might want to see if they can order it in a longer size (like they can order petite dresses)

  • Yes, I sell wedding gowns and they are suppose to be on the floor. Tell them to fix that when you start the alterations. This is your day and whatever you want is what you should have.
  • this is my dress:

i don't have any pictures of me in it that show the length... stupid me. haha. but i'll definitely talk to the store/a seamstress. thank you all for your advice... i didnt even think about the adding lace option :).

  • Very pretty and elegant.  I'm sure you'll look beautiful in it.
  • your dress is gorgeous. Ya I would say add a bit of lace for what you need to hit the floor. But if you like workout videos.... Jillian Michaels 30 day shred is awesome :) And you don't necessarily have to "diet" or eat like a rabbit. Just count calories and/or portion control! Only eat 1 serving and drink water and the weight will fall off :) If you "diet" too much... usually it ends in a binge of the foods you wanted but didn't eat :) Good luck! You will look awesome!

  • WOW your dress looks awesome and Im sure you will too. I agree with PP about lace or checking about ordering it in the correct length. I also agree with MrsH about dieting too much. Try not to stress too much because you want to avoid stress eating and other stress habits.
