XP from AA - Bridesmaids dresses in different fabrics

So my mom got it into everyone's heads that if the BM's aren't going to wear the same dress (scandalous), then they should at least be in the same fabric and have a similar element, ie: ruching, waistband, etc.

I want to show FI and my other BM's that it's okay to wear different fabrics, as long as the color is the same. I really really really want my girls to be able to wear their dresses again. I shared earlier that I spent $280 on a hideous dress that I will never ever ever ever wear again and it kills me. Wearability is the only thing that matters to me, besides the color and the length.

So, some details and then please share some pictures with me! Color is red, like scarlet red, and they should be knee or cocktail length. Some of the girls love chiffon, one is in love with a satin dress. I don't really care, as long as they love it.

Oh, and I know that I still have plenty of time, but my BM's got excited and wanted to start dress shopping and now it's turned into this debate. *raise hand* guilty as charged.

ETA: Feel free to tell me I'm totally wrong, as well, but please give me some photographic evidence!

Andplusalso: AA, heehee! We could have our own AA here on NEY.

Re: XP from AA - Bridesmaids dresses in different fabrics

  • Here is a pic of BMs in different dresses (and I think different materials? it's hard to tell):

I think it looks fine. So if you don't care then I don't see a problem with giving your BMs the guidelines and then letting them pick whatever.

  • That is really hard to tell in that pic... Boo.

I don't have a problem with it at all, as long as it's the same designer so the color matches. EVERYONE else has a problem with it.

BMs have dresses with different cut, fabric and shade of turquoise.  I honestly like it better that way.

I totally agree that when it comes time to have this discussion with my BP, wearability will be a huge factor!

Here are some images I found:

  • I couldn't do it.  Especially after working at a bridal salon.

Color looks different from fabric to fabric, even under the same designer.  So, you could end up with 6 dresses that aren't the same color.  If that doesn't bug you, then that's fine, I say go for it.  Personally, I prefer the concept of picking out a designer, fabric and color and letting them pick their dress.

One is chiffon from Nordstrom and the other is like a solid cotton dress from David's bridal.

If it were up to me, I'd prefer to stick with the same fabric. Even if you choose the designer and a color, the difference in fabrics will look differently (might not look like the same color). Most of the designers out there have several styles in the same fabric and color. I'll try to find pics.

ETA: Ugh Peek, take the words right out of my mouth why dontcha? You're too quick for me.

  • I agree with Peek and Ollie, and if your girls don't mind then I think thats ok to pick one designer, fabric, and color.

  • I like the look of slightly varried shades/fabrics.  I think your best bet to convince them is to just go to a store and try some on together so they can see first hand what it will look like.

I second this. The colors won't match exactly with different fabrics but I think it is still a nice look.

Will you be able to get all your BMs together for a shopping trip?

  • I'm with jemmini and beth. I don't think it will look bad if they wear different styles and fabrics (as long as it isn't like 6 in satin and 1 in chiffon). In the end, what do YOU think? Is it going to bother you if they are wearing different fabrics?

I suck because looking at the pics 3 out 4 picked the same dress.  Haha.  Here's a link to my bio anyways.  There were other options 3 years ago when they were picking dresses but here's a link to the fabric category on J. Crew.  Three have worn their dresses since our wedding.  Cool

I think that sticking with the same fabric is a good idea if you want the same color.  If you are okay with being in the same color family, then different fabrics would work.  I just wouldn't expect them to be the same color in person or photographs.

  • What's funny is only one girl (out of 5) really wants a satin dress, but I know if I told her chiffon, that she would do it and still wear it to a party.

I have two BMs that are local and the last time we went shopping together, they decided on "not shiny" fabric, preferably cotton sateen, which is a mother to find. So I think we're going to have to stick with chiffon, unless I can find another designer that has the right red in cotton sateen. They were the two that were so adamant about having everyone in the same fabric because they hated the look of satin next to a dull fabric. :(

That being said, I do care that they're in the same color. And it would look really funny if only one girl was in satin and everyone else was in a different fabric. You guys are making me see the light. I'll go back to my original plan of same designer, fabric, and color. And keep reminding me that there is PLENTY of time left.

Yeah, I just told everyone to pick a color that's sorta kinda comparable to DB champagne. I didn't give any guidelines about fabric and ended up with 2 girls in satin, one in sateen, one in chiffon, and one in a brocade. I've seen all the dresses individually, but haven't seen them all together. We'll see how it turns out. It might look like crap. Haha.

I am starting to get excited! Yay!
  • Audrewuh - look at my wedding pics on FB, and you'll see two BMs in chiffon and the MOH in satin. Same brand, same color, same length, different styles and fabrics.

My only issue with the satin is it wrinkles too easily.
  • My girls are wearing long, golden dresses from DB. They can pick any fabric or style they want. I can't imagine it will look horrible or ruin my wedding pictures.

I actually like the look of bridemaids not looking all uniform, because it looks more like a costume to me if they all match.

I agree with this! Though it is traditional for them all to be the same... I just don't appreciate that look much.

Here are the dresses my bridesmaids picked:

  • Darnit, you can't tell from that pic that three are chiffon, and two are cotton taffeta.
  • I don't mind the BM's in different dresses or even in different shades in the same family as long as it makes sense.  You almost kind of have to make it look random on purpose for it to come out right.

I like this example because you can seem a theme and there's a certain feeling about the dresses collectively.

  • Brittney, i2i on the costume thing.

I am not liking the first picture Mutley posted, but I like the second and third pics Brittney posted. I think I'm just going to have to have them stand side by side and go from there...

Leia, how have I not seen your wedding pics?? I fail at FB stalking.

SS, I've got a very specific color in mind. We're getting married at our alma mater and our colors revolve around the school colors, therefore, it's a pretty specific red and I don't really want varying shades of red. :/ Then that goes back to it looking costume-y... bleh.
