Harry Potter Reception Ideas

I was wondering if any of you all have ideas for a harry potter themed reception. It's not going to be over-the-top harry potter, just some cute add-ins (; Thanks!

this could be a tricky one. I think one think that might work well is having a lot of candles to bring in the idea of the floating ones in the great hall. bringing in some victorian/midevil elements could also mimic the design inside the castle, like tapestry or a victrola. you could get your own wax seal for the invites and use a caligraphy font.

    good luck
  • I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, but I really don't see how this is going to work without entering into a birthday party feeling.

  • I'm with you blackfire.  I consider myself a huge Potter fan.  Anxiously awaiting the last movie(s).  But I have a hard time thinking wedding here.

My niece is a big Alice in Wonderland fan (from way before Tim Burton).  Her wedding cake was a nod to the Mad Hatter.  And that was about it.  It worked for her, and people who didn't know about her fascination just thought it was a whimsical cake.

I'll work on it, but I'm not feeling it.

  • My pianist played Hedwig's Theme (the main HP music at the beginning of the films) during our unity candle lighting.

I'm a crazy HP fan, but the only way I can see this happening is more of a "Autumn" theme. When I throw Potter Parties, it usually involves real pumpkins as decor, lots of white candles, and Potter-themed food. You could have a Butterbeer signature drink. Have a dessert table with Pumpkin Pasties, Mini Treacle Tarts and Cauldron cakes. Other than that, I think it's going to be overboard.

  • What are your colors? I would pick your favorite house and do their color scheme. Am I lame?
  • And definitely make it a fall or winter wedding.

No, I was thinking this too  :)
  • I think the more subtle you go, the better it will look. Like, as someone mentioned, you can pick your House colors and go with those, especially for the cake. Or even mix them up a bit.
Candle chandeliers and candlabras, butterbeer (they have a really good recipe at mugglenet.com), and vague owls tied into the theme.

Whenever I take those online quizzes, I always end up a Huffleclaw. (Ravenpuff?) *sigh* I guess I'd have to do FOUR house colors.

  • I like Slytherin's colors the best, but I'm definitely more of a Ravenclaw.
  • Haha, I just realized I had Gryffindor colors.  Maybe have harry potter characters for the cake topper?

  • It seems like you're aware that this could turn into "Birthday party theme" very easily, thus suggesting only using small add-ins.  I'm curious, does Harry Potter have anything to do with you and your FI as a couple?  It's a HUGE obsession of mine, so is Robin Hood, and my FI is a Chicago Bears fanatic, everyone knows...but none of those things are going to be there on our wedding day.  Sometimes one has to pick and choose.

Then again, maybe I'm just a little jealous =)

  • Maybe you could use candies that reflect wizard candies as favors?  Like every flavor beans (in your colors)?
  • I like the idea of house colors, and jelly bean favors.

    best.thread.ever.

ETA: you could easily do a candy bar with book-inspired sweets. Jelly beans as already mentioned. Lemon drops, gummy stuff, red hots, etc.

  • I'm not sure if this would be over the top....but if you had a photobooth or photo area you could have a few, small  Harry Potter props like the HP glasses, wands, etc.....

you should have a sorting hat for your guests when they come in to tell them what table they are at......don't know how this would be done...but it is a cool idea!

I think this would be good too, but I could be a little biased since we're doing this (Bill & Ted style!) for our wedding.

I also LOVE PP's sorting hat idea.  It could be a nightmare to figure out, but if you could hammer down the logistics it would be AWESOME!

Or maybe you could make your escort cards out to look like the sorting hat?  Not as cool, but it would probably be easier.

  • I think incorporating owls would be cute.  Instead of little birds in a cage do small cute owls.  I also agree with house colors, maybe label or separate tables that way.  You could also use branches (willow for the whomping willow) in your decor.  I agree with the use of candles, that would definately incorporate the feel, and using the candy or treats from the stories.  It would make an awesome candy bar.  If you do a menu or program you could make them scrolls.
I think it would be cute to hide a wand in your bouquet, but I'm kinda geeky so I definately like that kind of thing.  My fiance and I are incorporating a lot of video game things into our reception so I know how hard it is to keep from looking too much like a party.
  • I just want to say I think it's an awesome idea! Especially since you want to include small touches, without going over the top. I'm doing a similar thing but with Alice in Wonderland for my wedding.

Like PP's, I like the idea of using your favorite house colors as your color scheme, the jelly beans as wedding favors, or just a candy bar. I suggest using lots of candle sticks or candelabras for the centerpieces.

    Good luck!!!

  • You can get creative here- try serving "butterbeer" (club soda w/ butterscotch syrup) or find the alcoholic equivalent online.  Make it more of a fall theme- lots of cakes and delicious dishes on the table (serve food family style instead and use long tables to get the hogwarts feel). Lots of tall tapered candles. Your colors could also give it a nod- use house colors and seat people by house. If you can get some sort of owl theme in that would be cute or have people have hogwarts letters or rolled up parchment to get to their tables.
