[QUOTE]My future sister in law has a small white dog and she SHEDS everywhere.  Ben and I went to babysit her son a few nights ago and I didn't feel like I could sit on anything without getting the damn dog hair all over myself. Frick!

see i hate this! one of our cats is white and furry (in our defense she had short hair as a kitten and the damn adoption place claimed she was a short hair).. but we bought a special vacuum to handle this! We use one of those fur roller things probably EVERY damn day and vacuum every other. Yea its a pain in the butt but its worth it and takes 5 minutes.

Also the pet thing. FI makes fun of me, because I'm paranoid about the pet smell.  I've warned our close friends to tell me if it ever smells like wet dog. I hate that.
  • What is even worse than the pet smell, is the pet smell which someone has attempted to cover up with air freshener. Maybe my nose is just sensitive, but when I walk in, I'd rather smell bleach or vinegar (clean smells) than some really heavy flowery crap that is just hiding cat odor. ew.

  • When we are supposed to eat there with mail and other junk still scattered on the table.  I don't mind stuff being put on the table, but I think it should be removed for dinner time even if there are no guests or if the guests are very close family.

When napkins are nowhere to be seen.  I would like to not wipe crumbs off my mouth if I'm eating lunch at someone else's house.

No toilet paper in plain sight if the toilet paper is almost out.   Especially when there is no toilet paper in an easy to find spot like the front of the cabinet under the sink and it's a close enough friend or family member for me to go and open their cabinet.

This. When people don't own book cases I just assume they keep their books in boxes in a closet. Because I cannot possibly be friends with people who don't own books.

And trust me, I've moved a lot and lugged those boxes around. I know it isn't fun.

  • And I love pets.  I love dogs, and I love cats, and I don't mind them being in the house.  But yeah, if I come over to your house and have to dodge hair the whole time, that's just sick.  I shouldn't be coughing up hairballs.

Whenever anyone has to tell me, "You can move that if you want," in order for me to have a place to sit.  I don't randomly drop by people's houses, in fact, most of the time they have a few days notice.  Please create a spot for me to sit yourself.

Houses that have weird smells.  My ILs house is like this and the house is only 7 years old.  But it seriously smells like soy sauce and mothballs all the time.  It took about 6 months before I wouldn't be able to notice the smell anymore.  But still, like 6 years later, I can still smell it on my clothes and in my hair when I get back home from visiting.  It actually got to the point where I wouldn't wear certain items over to their house because I didn't want them smelling weird until laundry day (like coats).

  • My grandmother's house smelled like dog THREE YEARS after her dog died. True story. Ugh.

I find that actually brushing my insanely long haired cats keeps them from shedding so much fur all over everything. If you have pets, there will be pet hair in your house. No denying that. But the amount of pet hair is a direct result of how lazy you are.

  • Mostly, I judge filth. Not plain old messy or even that "gee you should have cleaning the bathroom a few days ago" look, but actual filth. Dirty dishes, nasty cat boxes, trash not taken out, dishes laying around the livingroom, anything like that.
  • Are you jotting this down Katie? :P

  • Lack of litter box in the house if you are a cat owner.  Or lack of water bowl indoors.  This is pretty much just if the cats are primarily outdoor cats, but I think it's somewhat lazy and shallow to make the cats go outside in the winter just because you don't want to have to clean a litter box or find a place to keep it.  Get an automatic cleaning one and put one of those tents over it.  Unlike dogs, they don't have to go outside to use the bathroom.

And even outdoor pets deserve water that's not dirty or partly frozen.  I always changed the water bowls at least 1-2 times a day in the summer at my parents' when the cats wanted to go outdoors during the day.

My mom said her great aunt was like that. "Come in! Sit down! Pull up a chair!" Except there would be no place to sit because of all the stuff on everything. I'm sure this drove my mom crazy because she's a huge neat freak. But I can see it driving normal people crazy, too.

My grandparents had a ton of pets - dogs, cats, snakes, rabbits, everything and they all lived in the house.  Their last pet died six years ago and my dad's allergies STILL act up when we go there.

    UGH GROSS.

  • Jas, when we were at mil's over the weekend there was a picture of a really adorable blonde hair blue eyed boy in a picture frame. Scott asked who it was (seeing as how there are no blonde/blues in the family) and she goes "Oh it's just the picture that came with the frame"

Seriously? The frame was propped up on display on a bookcase, not just laying down or something.

Her house scares me. She has 2 shitzus and a toy poodle and the only time they go outside is for yearly vet visits and yearly grooming visits. You walk in and it's crazy, then you smell like the house until you shower/do laundry.

CS, After we got the leather couches life with the shedding fur beasts is so much better. Just brush it off onto the floor and vacuum. We used to have a futon and then a cloth sectional and both were horrible for getting off the fur.
  • She obviously needs a frame that says "Stranger" Katie. Now you know what to get her for Christmas.

  • On the shedding thing, a combination of brushing the one shedding dog with a Furminator and getting a Roomba changed my life. Literally. I don't have dog hair on my floors or my sofas any more.

[QUOTE]Also, dog or cat pee smell. I have four dogs, so I'm not judgy about how many animals you have, believe me, I get it. I get judgy when you either don't train your animals properly, don't clean out their litter often enough, and then don't clean up after them properly. I have two chihuahuas that I cannot for the life of me break of peeing on the rug. So the rug gets vacuumed at least twice a week and steam cleaned once a month.

[QUOTE]Dirty dishes. I'm not talking about a few well rinsed plates that haven't been put in the dishwasher yet, or a stray glass here and there. I'm talking about that half empty glass of red wine that's been on your coffee table every time I've been over in the last month. That actually happened. Or if I can smell your dishes. I know washing dishes is a PITA, but seriously, even handwashing an entire sinkful (both sides) doesn't take more than 20 minutes.

HEY!  You must have been to FI's house before I moved in.  UG - this was a habit I HAD to break. All of his friends use to call his house "The Shack" - one because of the total mess it was, and two because the street name is Shackamaxon.

Neighbors have been in the house since I've moved it - they give me props for getting rid of the smell and insect problem <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" />

  • I cannot handle going over my FILs place.  It reeks of smoke....because they are smokers.  The walls have a film of smut on them from the smoke.  Everything in the house smells like smoke.  FBIL leaves his dip cups all over..... I shudder.  I come home from visiting and have to wash myself and all of my clothes to get the smell out of my nose.  If we are given gifts from them....like toys for the dogs they REEK.  EVerything gets washed prior to use.
I seriously cannot stand the smell or feeling of dirty grittiness.

Oh yeah, also want to get on the judging the animal smell train.  I HATE THAT.  We currently have two cats (mine) and a dog (his).  I am bathing that dog at least once a month, I wash all it's bedding once a week, vacuum and dust at least twice a week, and, of course, the litter is cleaned twice a day and changed once a week.

I love animals, I hate animal smell.

And I have another judge about animals - not so much people's houses - but I judge people who assume that because their dog is their "child" and the apple of their eye, I sure as hell don't want it running up and sniffing me (especially if it's HUGE), or licking my feet or laying next to my legs at the dinner table while I'm trying to eat.  It's not cute, tell your damn dog to go lay down in the other room and get out of my face.  Do not tell me "oh, that's just what he does..."

My dog knows when to stop, and if he doesn't , he goes in the other room so my guests can be comfortable.

  • I second (or maybe I'm third?) about dishes... I'm pretty sure I hate doing dishes just as much as anyone but seriously... it takes less time to do the dishes than it does to cook the meal...

And I swear I only own one cheesy sign thing... it's a wooden board that was hand carved and painted over our bed that says "always kiss me goodnight" that reminds us no matter how crappy our day was, we have each other and never go to bed angry... extreme cheese I know, but that's my one and only ...

    That is absolutely deplorable.

I mean again - I don't care if people smoke, that's their thing - but you have to know what a nasty toll it takes on your house and your car.  Sitting in a house that reeks of smoke is sick.
