LOOK WHAT I FOUND!

In our woodshed yesterday:

There's been a stray hanging around for a few weeks, and I guess this is why!

  • I WANT THEM SOOOO MUCH!

They have the same markings on the top of their heads as our cat Jack.  Awww.

Are you going to keep them?

  • I really like kittens.  Adult cats are hit or miss.  Can I borrow one for a bit and then give it back?

Er, wait.  I should just visit it.  I don't think my dogs would get along with the kittens.

I'm not sure, they're about 5 days old. They're not walking yet. The mom is wild and wild can be. But I'm feeding her now in hopes that she'll stick around. In a couple more weeks (if the mom hasn't moved them) I'll start playing with them and stuff, and then if they stick around, we'll get them fixed and keep them.

I've been trying to think of names though!

You wouldn't have been jealous of my wood shed yesterday - well, you would, then it would have went away REAL quick.

We found a dead cat in there too. A HUGE tom cat. Dead. GROSS. I freaked out. I'd never seen this cat before.

  • Do you have a feral cat organization near you?  If so, they'd help out with a "catch, neuter, and release" for the mom, and neutering and possible adoption for the kittens (if you don't want to keep them)
  • Awwwwww, cute!

    Name one Milo.  Just because.

  • We hardly have a pound, OWN.

Actually. For a while yesterday, we thought maybe the dead cat was the mommy cat, and we didn't know what to do with the babies. But then we saw the mommy cat go in the shed and I saw the kittehs nursing.

LVB, it's not necessarily "bad" to get one out of the paper/off Craigslist, but you have to be careful.  There are a few people in there that honeslty just want to find their pet a new home, but there are others who are backyard breeders.  You can usually sort those out by the substantial "re-homing fee" they request, though.

The benefit of going through a shelter is that the cat has usually been somewhat pre-screened, and they may spay/neuter with the cost of adoption if necessary.

ETA: Also, a good shelter will take responsibility if the animal is sick when you get it home.  For instance, I got my dog from the Dumb Friends League, and as soon as we got him home he was coughing.  We took him to our vet, and he had kennel cough.  Took him back to DFL and they gave him all the medical care he needed for free- it would have cost us probably $500+ if we'd had to take him to our vet (he was overnight for almost a week).

  • I wouldn't think anything harmful of getting a "free" one out of the paper.

  • Thanks for the heads-up, Kiki.

Our shelter doesn't include the spay/neuter fee, so we'll have to pay that anyway.
ANIMAL PEOPLE: Is it as 'good' to get one out of the paper (for free) as getting it from the shelter? Please don't jump on me, I've never, ever had a pet before. I wouldn't go to a pet store for an animal, but is getting a free one from the paper just as bad?

I don't know, the only thing I can think to suggest is to figure out how much the shelter charges to have the kitty fixed, shots, and microchipped versus how much you'd have to pay a vet to do it if you go the kitty from the newspaper.  As far as the whole "puppy mill" issue which is probably what you're more concerned with, I have no idea.  If it's not a breeder, it's just someone whose cat or stray cat had kittens, I don't think there is an issue there.

We got our orange tabby from the humane society and paid about $70 to get him fixed, his first round of shots, and microchipped.

  • LVB, check with vets in your area, too. That's how I found my orange tabby. A family took in a stray who turned out to be pregnant. After she gave birth they helped raise the kittens then listed them for free on their vet's bulletin board. All she asked me to pay was for his first round of shots and then to get him neutered when he was older was only about $35.

My mom's vet actually takes strays in no matter their age and updates their shots and spays/neuters then gives them away.

As long as you are providing a home for an otherwise unwanted animal, I think it's okay.

  • I LOVE orange kitties!

LVB, it depends on the pet. If someone needs to give up a pet, that's one thing. If they found a pile of cats, that's one thing. If they're too dumb to get their indoor/outdoor cat fixed and she has a litter of kittens, I wouldn't trust those people to have a healthy litter, nor would I want to reward their behavior. Sorry if that sounds bitchy.

  • I appreciate those sentiments, but I see it more as giving a poor kitty a home, not rewarding the owners bad behavior. How do we know where the kitties from the shelter come from? Someone had to have had an unfixed cat in order for them to get there.
I think as long as they are giving the cats away, it's probably okay. You can't guarantee the health of any animal until it has been seen by a vet. If they are charging for the cats, then I think you would be rewarding bad behavior.

  • LVB, call the Jefferson Animal Hospital.  It's across from Jeff Mall.  They're a smidge pricey as a vet, but handy to have close if you need 'em.  But, they'd know who else might have kitties too.
In Response to Re: LOOK WHAT I FOUND! : I think it depends on how much they're requesting as a fee, and why.  This may vary regionally, but rescuers around here will tell you to never list an animal as "free to a good home" on Craigslist.  It's too likely to be snatched up and sold for animal testing or -- in the case of dogs -- bait in a dog fight.  (Apparently, bait dogs are used to get fighting dogs all riled up before a match.)  The common advice is to request a small "rehoming fee" to weed out these potential scenarios.
    Posted by Celles
I can see that. But as someone like LVB, who's in the market for a cat, she doesn't really need to worry about this. I was commenting more on the seeking side of the equation since mery mentioned people who don't get their animals spayed/neutered and continuously have pets to give away because they are too lazy/selfish to take good care of their pets. We paid for our cat's shots and neutering and I think that was wise because we got copies of all his paperwork and it did probably weed out some people who really can't afford a pet and think "Oh, free cat! This will be so cheap!"

LVB, When we brought Ozzie home from the Kentucky Humane Society, they gave us a 30 day (45 day after an upgrade via phone) pet health insurance plan for free. This covered all of his vet visits that were needed to get rid of the usual crud that dogs/cats get when living in such close quarters with one another. This was probably around $200-300 worth of expenses. I don't know about cats, but they also microchip the dogs for free.
