Snarky Brides

Fried squirrel?

I thought I was going to have to eat this at my FI's family reunion and have been DREADING it but it turns out its a joke his uncle makes.  I don't know how I am going to survive three days of this craziness.  Luckily I still have a few weeks.  Does anyone else's FI or husband's family have "interesting" traditions (a la fried squirrel)?

  • Dude... I could write pages about some of the craziness that has gone down in my family and in my H's.  In fact, I owe you all a tale of Uncle Bob.  Maybe I will start typing that up right now.

  • I did not go snipe hunting, because I know about snipe hunting :) Sometimes, it pays to be the boss' kid...

J's family exchanges joke gifts at Christmas. It's a big production. Like sometimes they'll spend $20 on something totally useless (J has a Flobee - seriously - upstairs). I just don't get it. Then everyone has to buy stocking stuffers for everybody else. I guess its because I'm used to my mom doing stockings, and it's always little, useful things (or sometimes something silly, like for J - 1001 Uses for Duct Tape). The joke thing is funny I guess, but I'd rather spend $10 or $20 extra on  a gift rather than something stupid. I hate it. Oh, and we go around in a circle and open one.present.at.a.time.

  • My family is also the crazy side. We've had deer, squirrel, rabbit, dove, wild turkey, bear, elk, goose, boar. Uh, I know there's more. I've eaten things that would make other people vomit. But it's all delicious.

<div>They (FI's family) fed me chili this winter and forgot to tell me it had deer meat mixed with the beef.  It honestly didn't taste much different than what I'm used to.  I still couldn't help but picture Bambi though.  Boar is one I haven't heard his family mention.  </div>
  • Venison (fancy name for deer) is delicious. It's leaner than beef and it's natural. My family, including H, hunt, so we have a freezer full of venison right now. Basically, my family is hunting, fishing, Harley's, and generally outdoorsy.
  • Maratea: FI's family is like that too, hunting, fishing, camping.  I love to camp but worms are the number one thing that freaks me out (I skeeze out like an idiot).  FFIL wants to take me hunting as a spotter due to my uncanny ability to see deer from great distances.  A side effect of once being hit by a deer I guess.  I knew deer had a fancy name I couldn't remember.

    PS. Your dog is adorable.

  • I ate fried guinea pig in Ecuador.

Don't tell my coworker! She has a pet guinea pig.

We had boiled pig skin in Barcelona. It was good.
  • Venison is so good.  Mr. Heels family recipe for venison roast:

Put 2-4 pounds of venison in crock pot.
    Add 2 chopped turnips.
    Add 6-10 chopped carrots.
    Add 1-2 chopped onions.
Cover in Moore's Marinade (about half a bottle).
Cook on low for 8-10 hours.

    Delicious.

Venison is one thing I could never eat, just because deer are so cute.

I actually gave up meat for six years because a cow at the petting zoo licked my arm and I felt all guilty  :(

    Go Flyers!

Yeah, I raised pigs and rabbits for 4-H, but they are too delicious to give up.

Jajph- I had to get over stuff like that when I was young. I think the first time I went hunting with my dad I was around 5 or 6. I also remember holding a deer heart, that was intense.
  • I had pet guinea pig when I was younger.  Chubbs (the guinea pig) was albino and I used to roll her up in paper towels and pretend she was burrito.  My mom has a picture of my brother and I burying her in the backyard.

  • Maratea - I'm not slamming hunting or anything. Hell, I eat meat quite often. I just could never kill an animal. I'm a total hypocrite.

I knew you weren't :) I was just saying I had to get past it because I was around it all the time. If I hadn't been, I'd feel exactly like you. I like animals better than people most of the time.
  • I like how we can all play nice here.  I think about a year ago there would be a fight about hunting over on P&E about twice a month.

You lookin' for a fight lady?
  • I had squirrel once in a stew. I was informed of this after the fact, and told to chew carefully in case there was still pieces of ammo...awesome!

Venison is so delicious :) When I was in high school a hunting dog wandered into my yard and was limping really badly. I gave her some food and water and patched up her leg while my dad called her owner. He was so grateful we helped her he brought us free venison for a year.

Aw, that makes me sad. I know some people are against it, and have their reasons, which is cool. It bugs me when they act irrationally to those who are pro-hunting.
