This is bullshit. Or maybe it's just me.

I talked a little about this before, but some background:

We do a charity for work each year at the holidays, usually Adopt a Family.  This year (I'm pretty sure out of laziness) the owners decided to ask everyone to donate to a community Thanksgiving thing that the church of our mobile car wash guy (who apparently is also a minister) was having.  I didn't donate because I donate to other charities and plus, I don't know this guy's church from a hole in the wall and they could be worshipping one legged blue goats for all I know.  THEN the one owner (we'll call him B) sent an e-mail a week before donations were due stating that he wanted everyone's participation and that he would be donating $200.  Well good for you, Mr. Millionaire, we haven't gotten raises in 3 years.

Anyway.  That was back in November and I just found out through the grapevine (it was supposed to be a secret I suppose) that the people who DID donate were invited to a cocktail party at B's house (mansion) this afternoon.  So they got to leave work in the middle of the day to go to this party.

I think it's bullshit and it really pisses me off.  Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but it feels really shady.

  • It's not just you. That's crap, and I think it's pretty unprofessional as well.
  • Dude, that is all kinds of wrong.  I'm serious.  Like that's a report it to HR type of wrong.

  • I'm with Dani in that you should report it.  That was BS anyways when they emailed about what you should donate, but to throw a party only for those who did donate is just really wrong.

  • That is seriously wrong. That pisses me off for you TR!
  • Not that it matters or makes it better, but that isn't the company Christmas party is it?

Either way it is very certainly BULLSHIT.

AND the fact that they're basically being given free time off for voluntarily donating. BS!!
  • I know, I'm really tempted to, but our "HR Department" is one woman who is also our office manager and she doesn't want to lose HER job so it never seems very effective to complain about someone higher up.  I hate this place so hard.

  • I think your boss is completely ridiculous.  You are completely justified in being pissed off about that.  They can't mandate informal charitable giving and shouldn't punish those who opt out.

  • So basically they paid for the party. I wouldn't feel bad. You're not out $50 or whatever amount those idiots gave.

I hate HR depts. that are worthless too. Ugh! I'm disgusted for you. That's really in the Christmas spirit, huh?
  • Your boss can't TELL you to donate, and then penalize you if you don't!  Everybody gets 1/2 a day, or no one does. Completely inappropriate!
  • This is bullshit. Or maybe it's just me -- You aren't bullshit, I don't THINK.

But yeah, that's all sorts of kinds of effed. I'd be hollerin'...especially if they are still getting paid for work whilst partying at the mansion.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Very unprofessional. It would be one thing if they AT LEAST held it after work (though that would still be BS), but ESPECIALLY to let them have a free half day while you and whoever else is still there working is completely out of line.

    Agreed....I'd ask to take my half day on Friday  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />

We sometimes have things were people can leave but due to coverage IF they feel like cutting us loose it rotates so I may stay late the day before Christmas but get to leave early New Years Eve...

Wish your HR was more effective but really your boss sucks...

  • Very Wrong. And all the money he spent on the party today? Well there shouldnt have been a party and he could have donated more to charity. He probably spend more on the party rewarding those that gave $5 each than the total amout that was given to the charity.
  • Total BS. It's one thing to say "if we raise this much for charity, you get half a day off" but it should apply to everyone.

  • Report it to HR.  And report it in an email (written form).  Even if she does nothing, if you ever get fired/deal with other stuff you have documentation (read, ammo).

The attorney in me is even more concerned that they cannot use religious affiliation as a hiring/firing reason or as a reason to give preference to certain employees (different than accomodation).

When your boss "suggested" you donate to a church, berated you (general) over email for not, and then held a private party/gave time off for those people that did donate to a church/religious institution, he stepped in it.  Big time.

    That sucks.

  • Totally, CALEO.  OP, you've already let B get away with all of these other d-baggy things... wouldn't it be fun not to let him get away with breaking the law?  granted, you'd need to find a new job after that, but it might be worth it.
  • That's so bogus.  Want me to fly out there and kick him in the junk?  I'll do it for free, mainly because I'm pissy and really want to kick somebody in the junk.
