Hey Ladies,

I just got my marriage license, but what is the protocol for after the wedding- does anyone know of guidelines online to get everything switched to your new last name.

    Your marriage certificate will come in the mail a week or two after the ceremony. After that, you need to change your social security card first, then you can do everything else. I've been using http://www.mrsforever.com/ to keep me on track. They have all the necessary forms and tell you how to do it step by step. HTH

    Assuming that this is the same from state-to-state, your officiant will sign some paperwork relating to the marriage license and mail that in.  You will receive an official marriage certificate (not the pretty one that may have been given to you when you got the marriage license) in the mail.  You can then take this certificate to the social security office to change your name and to the DMV to get a new driver's license. With all of this information, then the REAL hassle begins with contacting credit card companies, banks, employers, etc. to change your name with your new documents. 

    The process cannot be completed immediately after the wedding as you will be waiting for the paperwork in the mail.

    FWIW, I had to do my drivers license first, because my marriage certificate did not state my new name on it (I got married in Las Vegas, and they don't ask that question/do that there). I had to sign an affadavit at the DMV as to what my new name would be, get my DL, THEN go to the Social Security office for a new card.

    Also, if you are planning to drop your current middle name and use your maiden name as your middle name be sure to check that SS gets that correct.

    You also may want to ask for a second copy of the marriage certificate. There's usually a small fee with that.
