what do you give for a gift?

I have heard a lot of things about how much to give when you go to a wedding. What is appropriate? I have been good friends with the girl since college and am a bridesmaid. I dont want to be cheap but i dont want to be outrageous either. In general i am curios as to what people give when it comes to being a bridesmaind in a good friend wedding,  best/childhood friend and in their wedding, good friend when not in wedding..etc. thanks!

I usually give between $100-$200 if it's just me.  I'm a bridesmaid next year for one of my BMs and will give more (then again it's also 2 of us attending).

I usually try to at least cover my plate or if I bring a guest I cover both plates.  Do you know what they are paying?

Same here.. and I'll usually thrown in an extra $50ish if it is a good friend I've known forever.

ok thanks. i do know what they are paying per plate however, im a bridesmaid and weve been close ever since we met at our college orientation. some people told me that you dont give as much if the couple isnt paying for the wedding, but i dont know how i feel about that either. some people feel like you also dont give as much if you are in the bridal party b/c you have to pay for dress, shower, etc, etc. i have such mixed feelings! i looks like a good number to base things around is $300 tho.

If I could afford to, I would give a bit more if I was in the wedding .
