Just Engaged and Proposals

need honest (but respectful) opinions pease!!

Hello ladies! I have been married almost one year (wow) and my hubby purchased a matching anniversary band that is exactly the same as my wedding band. I have been debating for over 5 months now, as to how I should get the 3 rings soldered together. Both of the bands are curved because the diamond sits low and a straight band would not sit flush. Below is the E ring by itself. My favorite part about the ring is the side detailing, which is the main reason why I am needing your opinions here! The diamond is sits so low that once I add the two bands on each side it completely covers the side detailing and i feel like it it engulfs the diamond ( I did not think about ANY of this when purchasing!).  I always wanted a diamond that sat a little higher...so I was thinking of having the two curved bands soldered opposite of what they normally are. This would allow me to still see the side detailing because the E ring would literally sit on top of where the two bands meet.
  E ring by itself-detailing i don't wanna cover up!

Below is the option that looks pretty...BUT the side detailing is completely covered AND the diamond sits so low that I feel like it is engulfed. Hubby likes it this way. I do too BUT I wanted more of a higher sitting diamond (restructuring of the ring is not an option).

This is another option (the one I am leaning towards). I have the two bands "inverted." The E ring sists on top of where the twp curves touch.

below is a pic of a side view of how it would look. Does it look silly?

Another view to help you understand my crazy debate! lol

Finally, below is another pic of how it would look if I soldered it it the regular way.

Ladies, I know my E ring is not the biggest but I do love it...I just don't know about covering up my favorite part of the ring! The ladies at 2 different jewelery stores prefer it to be inverted (they agree with me). But I am so torn. Just need honest opinions. Returning bands for other bands, restructuring the E ring, etc, are not something we are interested in.  Sorry for the long drawn out post ladies...but I just really need your opinions here. :) I would really appreciate it!

  • Hmm this is a hard decision. I suggest waiting longer and wearing them both ways every once in a while until you decide and know for sure. Much easier to just wait then to have it done and wish you'd gone the other way. Is that an option?
I know for me I'd go crazy having mine not line up correctly (I'm a tad OCD) so I don't know if you'd want to wait, but you want to be sure!

Thank you for your help! It is hard to wear it with the bands inverted because they slip! But I do very often just sit and debate by putting it one way...then another! lol It wouldn't bother me to not have them line up, but you do make a good point. Ugh...this is so tough. :( I just don't want others to think it looks silly if  Iget it the way I want it...but then again, they don't have to wear it...right?
Does enough of the bands touch the e-ring when they are inverted to even DO a soldering?  Why are you wanting them soldered? I do think it looks "wrong" (as in incorrect, not as in morally objectionable at all) for the bands to be inverted, but it's not my ring, so there's that.
    Posted by StageManager14
Yes,  I have talked to 2 different jewelers--all have said it is possible to solder--they actually said that it is common to have inverted soldering. Thank you so so much for your post!! This is what I fear people thinking/saying...that it looks "wrong." Sigh...what to do...lol.

  • I'm not a big fan of soldering rings together myself but with yours I can see why you would like it done. My favorite part of both my ring are the engraving on the top and sides. I always make sure to point it out to people when they look, so I can understand not wanting to lose a part of what drew you to your ring. I would say wait a little bit longer before coming to a final decision but don't worry about what other people think everyone has different tastes. Personally I love the way it looks when it’s inverted, it’s so different looking. The other way I feel like is more commonly done, so personally I would want to keep the part of the ring that you love and also do something to be slightly different. Of course this is coming from someone who has an Asscher cut sapphire as their main stone, so I like things to be different and have a more personal touch.

I kinda like the inverted look.. but it's hard to see something with such detail via pictures unfortunately :(
I agree that I would just wait it out a couple months and wear it one way for a while, then wear it the other way for a while. That might help you make a more knowledgeable decision.
You could also just wear the bands together on the opposite hand, if you really don't want to take away from your lovely e-ring detail :)

Also.. I don't understand why you would think you would get disrespectful opinions?

You are so sweet. Thank you for your input. The last thing I want is something that is "common" but I also care too much about what other's think. I think it's time to get over that? My sister-in-law has an Asscher cut sapphire as well...it's beautiful and unique. Congrats to you! :)
  • First of all, your rings are gorgeous! Second, I really like the inverted look better.  It really highlights your stone well without overwhelming it.  Plus, I like the uniqueness of it.  I understand not wanting to cover up beautiful profile details.  I had to give in and covered up some scroll-work on one side of my e-ring when I added my band, but I refuse to get an anniversary band on the other side b/c then the scroll work would never be seen.

    Good luck making a decision!
When you described the inverted bands, I didn't think I'd like it. After seeing the pictures, though, I like it a lot. The diamond is highlighted when the bands are inverted, but when they are worn the way they're supposed to be, the diamond looks smaller. P.S. -- I deleted the duplicate thread for you.

I never thought about wearing the bands on the opposite hand. Hmmm. Thank you!!! And the ONLY reason why I added the "respectful" part was because I had a heartbreaking experience on another wedding website (not this one, and name not to be mentioned). I had just gotten engaged and a person commented that "since we had been together for 7 years, I shouldn't have gotten such a small diamond." Since that day...I have been paranoid that someone will rudely comment on my .82 ring. (lol, as if I should be ashamed!! just crazy)  I am sensitive when it comes to that. To me size doesn't matter because it's not about the ring and I adore my ring...and other people's rings as well--big, small, yello, pink, blue, etc. But it broke my heart when someone made that comment and I guess I try to avoid any situation that might elicit one. Oh...and I LOVE LOVE your wedding picture. (The one that is attatched to your posts) :)

  • I personally love it with the bands inverted.  I think it makes the center stone stand out more and is a much more unique look.  My favorite part of my ring is the detail on the band as well so I would feel the exact same way.  No way I want the wedding band to cover it up.  oh...and I also appologize for the rude comment on another site.  Your ring is beautiful and I honestly thing it is ridiculous tho think that you have to get a bigger stone the longer you are together.  I'd personally rather have a bigger master bathroom!!!!!
  • I quite like the inverted look, personally. I only wonder whether it would be a pain to clean between the spaces?

Ladies...you are awesome. I am going to wait it out until I am 100% sure. I am leaning towards inverted. I guess I just needed opinions to make sure my out of the box thinking wasn't way out in left field! :) At least I know now, that it isn't! When I do finally make the decision and get it done, I will post a pic!

Definitely do! I love the idea of wearing them both ways a bit- is it completely obnoxious to try to leave it inverted? It's one thing to sit and play around with it, and a slightly different experience to glance down when driving or typing and think, "oh! my ring!"

I actually really like the inverted look;  I think that the intended way of wearing the two is also lovely but would be way too big on my finger (small hands), but that the inverted looks a little more delicate.

  • Hey, I think it looks great either way. I agree about giving it some time and dont rush it.

  • I really really like the inverted look.  I think the space in-between the three bands makes it really pop whereas when it's done the "normal way" they kind of all blend together.  But they're beautiful and you really can't go wrong - it's just a quesiton of which good option is the best one for you.
  • I like the second look.  It opens it up and it is different from what I normally see.

To me, the inverted doesn't look "wrong", at least not in the pictures.  I really like the way it looks from the top, although it does look a little bit odd in the side views.  Could just be because the rings aren't perfectly aligned/fused.

What about a third option, assuming you're not opposed to changing the order of the rings (forgive me if this is a terrible idea, I'm not a jewelry person, let alone know the proper and traditional ways of wearing wedding rings).  What if you put the engagement ring closest, followed by the other two (one of them inverted so they all line up)?

Something like that anyway, if the picture makes sense (board formatting seems to be messing with it a little).  That way you can still see the design from one side.
  • Agree with the majority, the inverted was is an unexpected surprise.  It looks lovely and unique.

hmm, I am not actually sure what you mean...haha.
is this what you meant by "have the ring closest and one inverted?"

    <a href="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/11/5/9b91a4b4-ab59-498f-a55b-54348c49f1c9.large.jpg" title="Click to view a larger photo" class="PhotoLink"> <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/11/5/9b91a4b4-ab59-498f-a55b-54348c49f1c9.medium.jpg" alt="" /></a>
I also played around with this option below...don't mind the swollen fingers...it's hot today!

    <a href="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/12/12/6cc18882-3858-49c4-8ce6-737b9331d161.large.jpg" title="Click to view a larger photo" class="PhotoLink"> <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/12/12/6cc18882-3858-49c4-8ce6-737b9331d161.medium.jpg" alt="" /></a>

I do know what you mean though but it looking a bit odd from the side view when they are both inverted and the ring sits on top. that was my initial thought as well.
  • I guess the second one was more what I was going for, although maybe reversed so the engagement ring goes on first.

But looking at the picture, I think your original idea of arranging them is best.
  • Personally, I would not soder them together at all. For a couple of different reasons.
    1) If you have to size the ring in the future for any reason, it generally becomes more of a repair than a general sizing. The sodering prongs usually have to be removed and replaced in orser to make the ring bigger or smaller depending on how much stretching or shrinking is needed. And that can add up to quite a bit of an expense.
    2) there may be days that you are in a rush or are doing chores and dont want to have that much bling on. You may just want to wear your wedding ring and nothing else. My mom originally had her rings turned into an interlock and actually changed them back because she was unhappy with having to wear it all or nothing.

I think it looks beautiful anyway you choose to do it, but really be sure before you make the decision to put hem together. :-)

Another view to help you understand my crazy debate! lol   Finally, below is another pic of how it would look if I soldered it it the regular way.
