  • Where are you going this year?

  • Yeah I "learned" how to snowboard 2 years ago, and have gone a total of 4 times.  We were going on an annual ski trip with H's friends and I wanted to be a little better at it, so we went twice last year before the trip.  The first time I was getting much better, so we went the second time.  First time down the hill that day and I feel and broke my wrist and needed surgery.  So I think I'm done snowboarding.  I will now be the ski bunny that sits in the lounge.

  • I <3 skiing. But H thinks he's too big for it. Ankles aren't strong enough to hold all of him up. I call bull because he played basketball for years and years. I think he just thinks he looks dumb and doesn't like that. Boo Hoo.

  • I get what you're H is saying though.  I played basketball, soccer, and softball for years, but I think I'm just too uncoordinated for skiing and snowboarding.  And its completely different when you don't have total control over your actions like you do when you're playing a sport.  I mean, yes technically you do, but you need to learn to maneuvar skiis or a snowboard the right way, whereas I already know how to run and jump.

Also, I feel like a giant tool when I'm falling 85 times while learning and there are 8 year olds zooming by me.

Ding ding ding! But sub out "8 yr old" and put in "Wife who can't walk a straight line without hurting herself, but is a good skiier". Stupid male ego.

  • I can't ski, though I've tried.  I might try cross country though.
  • Hahaha yeah I know the feeling.  I don't even have the male ego but I have the bitch wife attitude sometimes, especially when I see H 30 yards ahead of me, turning around to look at me with the WTF happened attitude.  Trust me, I can see it through the goggles and snowboarding helmet.

Actually, when I fell and broke my wrist, my BF was with us too and she was up with me (actually, its her fault that I fell and still tell her all the time that I blame her), and H was behind us.  After about a minute of me laying on the ground he came over and said "WTH, why aren't you getting up yet?"  Yep, I definitely hated him for the next half hour, as I got a sled ride to the bottom of the hill by ski patrol and taken care of in the first aid shack.

  • Not going at all this season, due to the peach.  And the ankle thing?  total cop out.  Ski boots are HARD.  You can't flex your ankles in them.  Knee injuries are the thing, not ankles.

Drag his butt to Snowshoe, buy him a lesson, and meet him at the Boat House for lunch.  If that doesn't work, come visit next winter, and I'll teach him.  I'm a decent teacher for beginners.

DNB, boarding is a whole other beast.  Not my thing.  I need to move my feet independently.  And it's WAY harder to get started, but normally a much safer learning curve.

  • Cross country is so much fun. I'm a stupidly bad downhill skier too, but CC is a great workout and you get to see so much beautiful scenery.
  • I think I'll start him at Paoli or Perfect North. I think going to a 'reall place' would terrify him.

  • Squirrly I like how you threw in the "normally" a much safer learning curve.

I broke my wrist around noon, and I was already the 3rd broken wrist of the day.  At the ER, there was 2 others before me, and while we were there a woman came in with something most likely torn in her knee from skiing.  They said those are the 2 most common injuries for each.

Oh and just for the record, I actually told this BF, who was also a BM, that she was kicked out of the wedding unless she called my mom to tell her what happened.  My mom is an over-worrier and was never an athlete by any means so she doesn't understand getting injured over something so stupid.  So I didn't want to be the one to tell her.  Then I told H that the wedding was off unless he was the one to call her and tell her I needed surgery.  So by the time I actually got a chance to call her later on she was much more calm and level-headed about it.  Haha, I guess I was a bridezilla.

  • I can't bring myself to try CC, although that's allowed while KU.  I LOVE downhill.  Particularly runs that make good super G race courses.

Yeah we have huge mountains near us, like Mt. Baker, and Whistler isn't too far where they had the last Olympics.  So H things its a brilliant idea for me to try snowboarding again on one of those.  Not gonna happen.  I'm actually a little relieved that he is gone all through the winter season so I won't feel pressured to go.

No, no, no, no, no.  Bad plan.  Really.  BECAUSE - those are both just ice covered sheets, covered with idiot skiers on the shittiest rental equipment ever.  If you go to Snowshoe, the snow quality is a lot better.  The hardest thing is to learn to turn and stop, and on ice, it's WAY harder.

Snowshoe has 3 areas - the basin, Silver Creek, and the Western Territory.  Silver Creek is a perfect beginner area.  Several nice runs that are steep enough that you don't have to pole EVERYWHERE, good snow, and a very light crowd during the day.  It's chaos at night, because that's where the night skiing is, and alcohol is prevalent.  But during the day it's awesome for newbs.

Once, at night, I was in the lift going up over a run with a massive S curve.  Guy coming down doesn't make the big turn for the bottom of the S.  He basically lays down on the back of his skis, but doesn't fall over.  So the skis are still going, full speed, at a tree.  We saw him later on, on our shuttle bus back to our lodge.  Covered in pine needles and mud.  He assured us it didn't hurt, but once the beer wore off, he was worried it would.  Don't be that guy.  Although it was FUNNY.

Seriously, though, someplace with good snow that's not too steep is the best start.  North and Paoli are just dangerous.

  • I just looked at the prices there. Foot in mouth Are there regular hotels near by that won't bankrupt us right now?

  • No regular hotels.  It's in the middle of NOWHERE.  But.  No need to rent from the resort.  If you do, the cheapest way is with two couples, and stay at Snow Crest in a 2 br unit.  Otherwise, look at www.vbro.com. I think you can get student rates on lift tickets.  But the cheapest is usually to go the weekend that Silver Creek is scheduled to open.
