We're serving 5 heavy hor d'oeuvres at our reception. Is it ok to say, "dinner, drinks and dancing", or do I need to specificlly say, "hor d'oeuvres reception to follow." It will be enough food to qualify as a dinner. TIA!

  I don't know what all those characters are above your question. 
  
  Even though heavy hor d'oeurves can compromise a meal, I would probably still mention it.  Some guests might be upset to show up to find out that a sit down meal isn't served. 
  But then again, if you aren't asking meal choices people might not assume there is a full meal anyways.  Dinner, drinks, and dancing might be fine.

  I would definitely mention "hor d'oeuvres reception to follow."  I've been to one and I was hungry the entire night.  It would have been nice to know to eat something beforehand.

  I would mention it.  I mean, why not right?  Telling them before hand will give them the opportunity to eat before hand accordingly and will avoid hungry/unhappy guests.

  Just another thing I though of.  I don't like mushrooms, olives, or shrimp (amongst many other things) which is usually the bulk of what most hors d'oeuvres are.  So I would appreciate knowing beforehand so I would eat at least something small to hold me over if there was nothing I liked.

  Dinner to me means substantial food.  I'd have to eat a damn lot of appetizers (and look like a pig in the process) to get full.  Definitely tell them what they're getting.

  You could say something about heavy hors d'oeuvres to follow.  Adding the "heavy" indicates that you're offering more than one tray of pigs in blankets to your guests, that it'll be substantial, but it won't be a sit down meal.

  I would mention it being appetizers because otherwise people might expect a sit-down meal, which is vastly different, even if the hors d'oeuvres are heavy.
