H isnt into politics and doesnt vote (that aggravates the fck out of me), but he lets me vent about Obama etc.

Its only when his brother is here and spouts off Bill Maher quotes that I get furious and have it out with him. He wont tell his brother to stfu, so I have to.
Cranberry- Ill ask you what I asked Celles then. If i wanted to say Obama is a dumb as a monkey, that automatically makes it racist because he is part black? Im not looking to argue, Im just genuinely curious.

Yes. Because of the history (at least in this country and perhaps others) of comparing black people to apes, monkeys, primates to imply that we are less than human or less evolved or less smart than black people. If you were from somewhere that didn't have this history or for some reason didn't know it, that puts it in a different context. Words have contextual meaning. Even if the person didn't mean it in a racial way, I don't think it's ridiculous to see why people would take it as a racial comment.

Another example I'll give: someone could tell me I'm talking gibberish and instead of saying "blah blah blah" they may say "ching chang ching chong". If someone said that to an Asian person, that's racially offensive in a way that is not when they said it me. It's rude, yes, but means more if it's said to someone else.

Evolutionists have been comparing the human race to primates since the theory began. No one seems to have a problem with that.

I also wasnt talking about them email when I asked you. I said numerous times that I thought she was a racist twat. I was talking more about the double standard.

omg Blue, I just watched Religulous the other day. I'm a non-Christian liberal, but I cannot tell you how freakin' pissed that movie made me. Like fuming mad. I haven't been that riled up in a long time. I hate 'documentary' style opinion pieces, nothing makes me rage more than saying opinion is fact.... To me, at the end of the movie it just made him look like a bitter, bitter, person, that couldn't accept another's viewpoint.

ETA: I realize this is an UO, because everyone just loooves this movie. And the statistics of it's revenue are ridic, ugh.

  • Vagas, it's a nice sentiment but I don't believe it will ever happen, partly because if your kid called a black kid a monkey (not knowing any better and just not liking him for whatever reason) the parents would be up in arms saying it was about race. I'm not saying they don't have a right to react like that, but as long as everyone reacts to those words they won't lose their meaning. Kids might not know what the older generation feels about words, but they learn fast.

Blue, if I heard someone call a black person a monkey or compare him to a monkey I would definitely think they were racist until proven otherwise. I don't know how you prove you're not a racist other than getting to know someone and having an understanding of what's in their heart/mind. In real life, I don't throw around the term racist quickly or easily. I assume most people are NOT racist until proven otherwise (like I hear them using racist terms or have racist views). Of course if a friend of mine used that term, and I knew she wasn't a racist or have bigoted views, I wouldn't then think she was a racist. I would talk to her about it, and I think we'd be able to have an earnest conversation about it. Sort of like this. But if it's someone I don't know, I would definitely throw the side eye and keep them at arms length.

  • Clearly I'm in the minority but I didn't know the monkey = race thing until the Obama scandals. I must have grown up under a rock or something.
    image
  • As an elected offical, you should KNOW that this country is sensitive about things like that. And with the first black president, race has been an even bigger heated issue since he took office on both sides of the political fence. Why on earth would you put his face on a monkey when you know that people used to literally believe that black people were like, one step up from monkeys?

    Posted by TheCranberry
This is what I was going to say. The comparison between black people and apes is something deep-seated, horrible, and rooted in a period when scientists were trying to come up with theories to allow for slavery by making people of African descent out to be a different species.

Blue, I spend a lot of my time as a researcher into 19th century sculpture looking at images like this one, taken from a scientific text:

So basically, that's a comparison between a white man's skull (exemplified by the Apollo Belvedere, once the most famous Roman antiquity), a black man's skull, and an ape's. Since I study this, there's no way I'm not going to make that connotation if someone mentions it.

However, I'll come and join you on your side of the argument by saying that you have a point, and it's not right to use on Bush either. For one thing, it's juvenile, but there's also plenty in the history books using images like the one above for Jewish people, or the Irish.

Also, it's interesting to learn that Obama is such a radical leftist. All the radical leftists I know disagree with him and feel he abandoned most of the promises he made to the Democratic base. :)

I posted my other post before you posted this. Yes, I know what you were getting at. I can see where you may think it's a double standard, but I think it's based on real reasons. Not just a random thing.

Katy, I think if more people were willing to have calm and rationale discussions on these issues we could get there. Blue and I disagree on this issue, but I think we've managed to discuss it reasonably and see each others' points of view (I hope you agree, Blue). The problem is that there is often so much emotion wrapped up in these issues and the political discourse in this country is so far away from rationale discussion and more about spewing vitriolic soundbites. It's disgusting.

  • I almost never pull out the race card, but I honestly believe that there are certain things you will never understand unless you're part of that culture or race or ethnicity. To me, I don't understand how you could NOT see the difference between a monkey with Obama's face and monkey with Bush's face.

Reddy, it reminds me of the term "coconut". My FI has friends who are from the Caribbean, and he calls them coconuts sometimes (jokingly). I called them that once, and they were shocked because apparently it's a term used to denigrate people from the Caribbean as stupid, unsophisticated, etc. I thought it was a friendly term FI used with his friends because I had never heard anyone else use it before. They weren't offended, but I was embarassed and have never used the term again. I've since heard it used as an insult to refer to someone from that area. Maybe it's a NY thing.

  • I think rational discussion can work, unfortunately I think when parents are defending their kids, or when race is involved rational discussion becomes unlikely. When it'ts both... well I wouldn't hold my breath.

I also will say, no, I don't have your experiences with race so I don't 100% understand where your coming from, but that is not a helpful place to focus. You don't understand the religious discrimination I may have received, or something else, but we can still learn from each other and get past it. Once you say, but you don't understand because your not x the conversation is mostly over.

See, I don't like that. I don't think it's cool to use potentionally slur-ish language or nicknames around somebody but then expect them not to do it. That's kind of why I get pissed when black folks will call each other n*gga in public, but then if a white dude was to roll up and do it they'd be ready to box. Don't use the word or allow it to be used around people if you're not okay with it being used by them.
Reddy- I have definitely heard of it before. My argument was intent. Sarah- I dont think he is a radical leftist. I just think he is not the moderate that he claimed to be when he was running. To me, he is far left, but not radical left.

Maybe he gives different speeches based on whether he thinks Republicans or Democrats are listening. :)

From the standpoint of being on the actual left, it looks like he's compromised on a lot of the hope and change that he promised when he was getting people to organize for him, and gone back on a lot of his campaign promises. The health care bill, for one, is much softer and more bloated than a lot of the people on the left would have liked. And it seems like a lot of the recent budget cuts have tended to skew towards things that would hurt Democrats.

During the Bush years, with an all-Republican congress, it felt like a lot of Republican ideas were getting passed and signed into law very quickly, without any resistance from Democrats. I think a lot of people expected the same would occur when the balance of power swung the other way, but it definitely didn't turn out that way. This is just a general impression, though - it may look different depending on what one is reading.
I think rational discussion can work, unfortunately I think when parents are defending their kids, or when race is involved rational discussion becomes unlikely.

Maybe not to focus, but it is relevent when people are all "I don't understand so stop making a big deal out of it." There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying "You don't understand." Because you DON'T understand. I can academically or logically know, for example, that being called a Jewish slur is bad and painful, but I don't really understand what it feels like. Because it's never happened to me. But I can say "I don't understand but that doesn't mean that I don't acknowledge that it's a bad thing."

PS Blue I am TOTALLY not saying that's what you did because you ain't racist, yo. You have black friends.
