Book club?

Re: Book club?

  • I think it would be really hard to find a book that absolutely nobody in the group has read, but that's ok.  I mean, people who have already read something can either re-read, or join the discussions anyway.

Snips, I'm not super familiar with Skype- how many people can chat at once?

  • I don't think many can skype at once, about 6 or 10, but it's possible I'm thinking of a different video chat.

I agree, I usually don't mind rereading something. Something I recently read that I think would be an interesting choice is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

I mentioned In the Garden of Beasts before but I would be happy with anything by Erik Larson. I haven't really heard of him before but all his books sound interesting.
  • I agree with Kiki that just because a few people have read it, that shouldn't exclude a book.  We can re-read (which I love to do!) or if we've read it recently there's no reason we can't discuss it.

I would throw out (and these are ones I've read or are currently reading):

The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst
Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown (this is a memoir and extremely awesome)
These Things Hidden by Heather Gudenkauf
    The Giver by Lois Lowry
    Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld

  • My suggestions and I haven't read any of these:

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.

The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin.

    Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -- the deliria -- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.  But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love

  • If y'all liked Hunger Games you should also check out Divergent by Veronica Roth. Apparently it's freaking brilliant. It's also dystopian like HG are but it's getting rave reviews everywhere. It's my book club read this month.

  • I'll put in for Sarah's Key as well, I have that one down (probably from you, Pink).  I don't mind re-reading at all, if anything, it helps for discussion.
  • I got Delirium on advance copy before it was released and it has been sitting on my shelf ever since. I would be up for that one too. Also, anything by Erik Larson.

  • Pink, I came across Sarah's Key recently too and thought that looked interesting.

Sarah's Key is also on my to-read list, so I guess another vote for that.
  • Pink, Delirium was fabulous. I really enjoyed it.

  • I agree Kiki, I don't think it would be bad to do one that some people have already read.  I just feel like The Help is one that everyone already read, so it would be like suggesting HG.  But I could be wrong.

I don't really have any suggestions since I get most of my ideas from people on here.

  • Alix!  Did you ever mention a zombie novel told from the POV of the zombies?  I don't know where I got this idea in my head.  I don't even know if it's a real book or if I just thought it would be a cool idea.

  • I have I am legend on my tbr list as well. Along with The Postman, Wuthering heights, Wicked, Brave New World, Consider Phlebas, and the Black Dahlia :)
  • Ooh this is another one that looks good especially since the RAPTURE is on Saturday!!

One Second After by William R. Forstchen
New York Times best selling author William R. Forstchen now brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real...a story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages...A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP).  A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies.

  • Erm... no? Not me! Haha.

I'm really not big on zombie books. I HATED The Forest of Hands and Teeth with a burning passion. But I've got Feed beside my bed and it's a zombie book so I guess we'll see if I can get through it.

  • I can't wait to read it, Alix.  I just finished Divergent on Saturday and it would be a good pick as well.  EXCEPT THAT YOU HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 2012 TO FIND OUT THE REST OF THE STORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

  • Damn.  You were just my most likely guess when it comes to hearing about books.  Maybe I just made it up.

I’m new around here, but I’d love to join in. Before Prince Charming and I found one another again 8 mo ago (He was my ‘first love’ – corny I know! – but we hadn’t seen each other in 20+ years) I was reading 3-4 books a months. Now that we’re together, but living 1,000 miles apart, all the time I use to spend reading is now spent on the phone or online talking to him. This would be a good excuse to get back into the swing of things!

Currently in my To Read stack: ‘Nice Work’ by David Lodge, ‘The Black Swan’ by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, ‘Under the Dome’ by Stephen King (not usually a Stephen King fan, but the premise looks intriguing), ‘Broca’s Brain’ by Carl Sagan, and ‘The Hunger Games’ (just because I want to know what the fuss is all about). And I’ll admit that romances are my guilty pleasure. So, in short,  I’m up for almost anything.

Maybe we should try picking a genre or two that we can all agree on?

  • I might like to be in, but I'm a bit scared of it.  I get snobby about what I read.  I did a book club with my friends, and when they picked Eat, Pray, Love, it's possible I went on a rant and alienated everyone in the room.  But if we have a good selection process and (as was mentioned earlier) can skip a month if the book doesn't suit our tastes, I could be in.

If anyone would like to do an Infinite Jest side project with me, please let me know.  I've been at it for weeks now, and am moving slowly.  A looming deadline might get me through these footnotes a bit more quickly.
  • Pink!  This reminds me- I have a bone to pick with you.

That "Wings" book.  TERRIBLE.  OMGTERRIBLE.  I mean, it was free, so that's cool and I'm not complaining but UGH.

  • Has anyone read the Passage by Justin Cronin?

    Sarah's Key sounds interesting.
  • I have to:

    A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron
This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog’s search for his purpose over the course of several lives. More than just another charming dog story, A Dog’s Purpose touches on the universal quest for an answer to life's most basic question: Why are we here?Surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious golden-haired puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey’s search for his new life’s meaning leads him into the loving arms of 8-year-old Ethan. During their countless adventures Bailey joyously discovers how to be a good dog.

I really enjoyed Under the Dome. I don't love all of King's books, but I did like that one quite a bit. Also, I just read The Stand, which is one of his older works, but also very good.
