Sky Lanterns

So since I'm looking for different ideas to entertain people outside during viennesse hour and my psychic idea got shot down (they wanted 2 hour minimum anyways) what about a lantern release? I've read mix reviews. I found some Eco ones online that don't use metal wires so I think they are more environmentally friendly. Does anyone have any experiences with this? We would likely do it on the beach.. is it even legal? I know wind would be an issue and we would call it off if needed. What do you think? Beautiful or too risky?

Here are some videos of what I'm talking about (of course on a much larger scale than ours would be)

I absolutely love this idea. I am pretty sure someone was doing it but I dont remember who. Undecided I will be watching to see if anyone has any reviews. I think it would be legal but I guess check with the venue?

I bought lanterns from them. They were pool lanterns. That may be a good idea for you if you are near a pool. I like the idea

I'm doing a lantern release at the end of the night with our guests.  I've done it before with my family during New Year's eve.  It was a huge success...not to mention the entire block stayed outside with us to watch them fy off.....you could have heard a pin drop since everyone was in awe!  I've never tried any pool/ocean ones though..sorry!!!

I don't think I'm allowed to put anything in their pool.. But I can check if this idea doesn't work out

bridetobecat- is it true it has to be in like 0 wind in order to set them off safely? And is it idiot proof? I dont want anyone setting themselves or anything else on fire! Oh and where did you order them from? And do you think I could do this on the beach or is it too close to stuff?

Sounds like a great ide, I think it would be really pretty  - makes me think of tangeled - that was the first time I saw it - but that was a cartoon :)

I know you mentioned you didn't know if it was allowed - go on Municode.com and click Florida and then your city - you can check out all the city's codes and ordinances and see if there is anything about it that would cause  issues or if you need some sort of permit or to get them okayed.

Love this idea!! Did you get this from The Hangover 2? LOL
I saw this in The Hangover 2 and feel in love with it. I know we wouldn't be able to do it because the venue is in a residental area. They would probably light a house on fire. But I think if your in a wide open space such as by the ocean, then it would work great.

Totally makes me think of Tangled! I love the idea! I've had no experience with them but just wanted to offer my support!

As other girls mentioned, I'd check with the venue before you do anything!

0 wind?  I'm not sure about that.  We did it after midnight on New Year's and it wasn't as if the wind was still, we did have a light breeze, and it carried the lanterns off nicely.

Idiot proof?  I think so, you just light two corners of the light pad and wait until the lantern is completely filled before releasing.  I actually watched two youtube videos before doing it, and it was very simple.  I'd have the adults light it for younger children if they want to participate.  <- I don't think anyone is at risk for burning themselves, but you can keep a fire extinguisher close if you'd like. ;c)

Where did you order from?  <- Amazon

Do I think you can do it on the beach?  Yes of course!!! Like I said, we did it at our house for New Year's.  We live on a culdesac, so everyone on the block was able to enjoy it, and even though there are houses and trees in the area, they fly VERY high and we enjoyed them.

    HTH!!! GL!!!

    Hi guys,

I happened across this blog and thought I should leave a comment to help you plan for your special day and decide whether Wish Lanterns (also called skylantern and flying lanterns) are right for you as well as to give you some tips to make it a success.
I also feel the need to mention that I work for http://www.wishlantern.com a specialist provider of lanterns so am knowledgeable about the product but also a little bit biased.Tongue out

    Key Considerations:

    - Use an Eco lantern: with no wire that is 100% biodegradeable, Keep your special day pure and litter free!
    - Burn ban: Make sure there is no ban in effect in the area you intend to launch lanterns
-Wind Speed: It is fine to launch these in a light breeze but I don't recommend launching them in windspeeds above 5mph
-Be aware of surroundings: make sure the lanterns flight path is clear of obstacles such as buildings/trees and if your in a coastal situation it's a common courtesy to advise the local coastguard.

To make it easy our lanterns are individually sealed with full safety/launch instructions and diagrams to make it easy. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to email us on contact@wishlantern.com

We also have a Facebook page that you're welcome to leave a question on. If you like us join the page. We have giveaways and facebook discounts promoted on there from time to time.  http://www.facebook.com/wishlanternusa Cool

    Cheers Dave

Hi everyone!  We are thinking about doing the same thing at our May 2012 weddind and this blog has been sooo helpful!  Thank you for the information!  Congrats to all that have recently been married and to those who are soon-to-be!
  • I don't know about the company that posted on this thread but the concept seems so risky to me. I posted this link in a couple other threads recently because I feel like it's important...

The lanterns can be super dangerous. While pretty, it isn't worth the risk in my opinion after I looked into it.

These are videos of lanterns catching fire when people are sending them up.

  • State law (Florida Statute 379.233) already prohibits the release of 10 or more sky lanterns, or lighter-than-air balloons, within a 24-hour period; violators can incur $250 fines.

I really wanted to do this for my SWF wedding, also, but I certainly would want to release more than ten & I don't exactly want to icur any fines.<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-frown.gif" border="0" alt="Frown" title="Frown" />

  • I read the law in question and it states that you cannot release more than 10 unless you retrieve them OR they are Biodegradable as long as you have certification of biodegradability then youre alright.
