kegs instead of bottles?

Hi ladies!! Is anyone planning to use/did use kegs at their wedding reception? My reception is at Budleigh and i know they let you bring your own alcohol, so i was thinking kegs might be a chaper option than bottled beer. Obviously i don't want to throw in a stack of solo cups and turn my wedding into a college keg party, but i was thinking there would be a way to 'keep it classy.' :) Any suggestions, ideas or experiences on this? THANKS!!! :)

I second this post! We can't decide which to use either. At first I didn't like the keg idea because I had a feeling it would look too much like a college party, but we went to a wedding last summer with kegs and it wasn't bad. They used nice clear plastic cups & it looked so much better than red solo cups.

    Hey Jenn,
I think as long as you have someone serving your guests drinks, rather than them pouring their own from the keg, it will help "keep it classy". Guests won't know the difference and it would seem less "keg party"ish in my opinion. I think it would definitely be cheaper, and more eco-friendly (less bottles to recycle). Great idea!

Hey Jenn- like Sarah said, if you have someone else doing the pouring, they really wont know the difference.  You can also rent glasses instead of plastic cups.

Not to take away from your orginal question, but I was wondering if we needed to get some sort of permit, insurance or license to serve alcohol at the Budleigh?  I think my planner mentioned some type of insurance.  Any idea?

Jenn~~I too am using 108 BLeigh and we are doing kegs.  Since we are having a bartender, he will be the one serving and the keg will be downstairs, hidden behind the bar area so no one will see it.  We are actually doing a keg of "Fat Tire" beer as our "specialty" beer and then doing a 1/2 keg of Miller Lite or Bud Light.  We are renting Pilsner glasses for the beer....but I wonder if clear cups would be ok too?  I know they would definitely be cheaper....thoughts?

If you are using 108 Budleigh, you have to have a licensed bartender or obtain a license from the town of Manteo.  Most caterers have their own license along with the bartender.

That being said, I am not sure about the plastic cups unless they are the very nice ones that almost look real.

OBX2011, I do believe pilsner glasses are in your future! ! !  from the MOB in charge.  Ha Ha.  I just had to pull your chain!

We did Pilsner glasses at the beginning and then switched everything to plastic cups as the night went on in order to avoid any broken glass, etc. on the dance floor.

Also, in terms of wedding insurance, I think it is a good idea to get some to cover you just in case.  I bought mine at wedsafe.com and it wasn't too expensive.  It definitely was not in my original budget but was nice to know that we were covered just in case anything went wrong....

We are also facing the same decision with 108 Budleigh.  They do require insurance but Bonnie told me whatever their requirement was covered under my parents' homeowners policy...I'm terrible with this stuff but we ended with that ;)

For the license, if you are serving liquor you need to get a license from the county.  You have to fill out an application and the license is $50.  Come to think of it, I need to check into that because I'm not sure how long it takes to get the license.

Keb~~are you serving your own alcohol or hiring someone?  If its a bartending service or caterer, they will already have their own license for this.  Just don't want you to have another thing to take care of in case you have already hired someone to serve.

We have a bartender through the caterer but I thought we still had to get the license.  Thanks OBX!  I'll double check with Black Pelican now...

thanks so much for all the feedback!!! we were thinking our guests would serve themselves from the keg, but i don't want to run into a license issue and it probably would be better in general to have someone else seving the beer than a guest.

OBX, are you bringing your own alcohol to budleigh? if so, where are you buying the kegs? or is your caterer taking care of all the alcohol too?

thanks again, yall are the best help!

I think the best option is to buy your own alcohol and hire a bartender from your caterer.  That is what we are doing. Plus you can get your caterer to provide any mixers, glasses, etc if you want.  Our caterer is doing all that for a pretty good price.

Yes, we are bringing our own alcohol.  We will probably get the kegs from BrewThru but if they are cheaper here in RIC, we will just bring them down with us.  It's a lot cheaper if you bring your own alcohol...vendors want to charge for everything nowadays.  We have been purchasing bottles of wine at Costco for the past few months to build up the stock.  That way, we aren't hit with a huge bill the week before we leave for the beach.  It takes the sticker shock off a bit, lol.

We are headed down Sept 20th, the week after OBX's wedding ;)  We are doing the same thing with our liquor.  Liquor doesn't go bad.  We already have about 12 bottles of Vodka (the most prominent liquor needed) and we are moving on to whiskey and rum now.
