Catering Costs...what can I get for my budget?

Hello Brides!  I'm recently engaged and just started planning and creating our budget.  Since we are footing the entire bill ourselves, I'd like to keep our catering to a modest $45 to $55 per person.  We are not drinkers and will only be providing soft drinks and wine on the tables instead of open bar.  I'd also like to serve "family style".

Is there anyone here that had a similar budget?  Which caterer did you use and what food is being served?  Is my proposed budget too limited for anything above basic food?

    I do!

Venus de Milo in Swansea, MA is giving us all of that, including the wine on the tables and apps for a similar budget. We're serving three entrees family style: baked stuffed sole, stuffed chicken breast and Portuguese roast beef.

We have not met our caterer yet but plan on serving a 8 course traditional Chinese/Cambodian meal (9 including dessert). We will have soft drinks, wine, beer and a signature cocktail served.  The cognac, we will bring in since they don't offer what we want.

Call Atomic Catering - talk to Tina. She worked AMAZINGLY with our budget. We're having a heavy appetizer cocktail hour and a seated dinner.

They are also making our cake! She's a dream to work with. Tell her Anne sent you!

We are doing a mixed grill menu of marinated steak tips, grilled swordfish, Key lime chicken and several sides using B&M Clambake Co. That menu starts at $32/person for 150 or more people and includes lemonade and coffee as well as watermelon they put on the tables if you want. The price goes up a bit the fewer people you have. They have several different menus to choose among and they're all in your budget.

I have menus in PDF if you want them. Just leave your e-mail or page me.

Also, where is your wedding? You should check to be sure you can have open wine on the tables; a lot of places we looked at where you bring your own caterer didn't allow that. Just a thought before you get too far in planning! :)

Thank you ladies for the responses...nice to know I'm not asking for too much.
and the tip on the wine is greatly appreciated.

Made the final decision today to hold the ceremony and reception at Roger Williams Botanical Center. I'll get all the specifics when we sign up.

I will definitely check out Atomic catering and I'd love those menu pdfs KB.  thanks!

We used Atomic Catering too, at Roger Williams Park Casino.  We also had family style and we did open beer and wine, which was an extra $14 or so pp.  It was only for the 21+ guests though so that cut down on costs.  Also, kids' meals were $10 even though they got the same thing since it was all family style.

If you need to rent tables, chairs, place settings, etc. then that is extra too.  Not sure if you are factoring that in as well.
