Calling all you wine lovers

I need help coming up with a good wine for my best friend. She isn't much of a drinker and typically goes for the super sweet mixed drinks when she does (like daiquiris, etc.)... She's tried moscato once and said it was alright but not great. I told her I'd try to find something, but I started drinking with red wine so I'm a little bit at a loss. The only thing I can think of is maybe a white zinfadel. Any suggestions?

Re: Calling all you wine lovers

  • Reisling?

It could also depend on the brand too. Maybe try a different brand of Moscato?

  • Yeah, though in my personal preference I side-eye white zin, it IS a popular, sweet, drinkable wine. Any late harvest wines are sweeter too--I had a late harvest Torrontes for dessert last time H and I went out, it was amazing. Certain rieslings are sweet but it can be hit or miss if you're not familiar with the designations.

If she's not a big wine drinker though, why are you choosing a wine? Is it for an event or something?

  • Yellow Tail Moscato tastes like the Welch's sparkling grape juice. I have had some of the "fancier" Moscatos and I do not like them as much as the cheapy stuff. What can I say, I'm a cheap date.

As my father says, "Friends don't let friends drink white zin." Of course, he also calls it the koolaid of wine.

It's not for an event, I think she's just looking for something to try and wanted suggestions so she doesn't start wasting money on bottles of something she doesn't like. Thanks for all the suggestions!

  • I second Irish's suggestion for late harvest!  Or ice wine.  Same concept, very very sweet wines!  I also like sherry & port, which can be a step into wine.

  • Haha Hike, see Mel's dad's comment. It's a great "entry level" wine for poeple who are intimidated by all the different wines, but it's sort of soda-sweet and not complex. I'm also not a huge sweet wine lover but there are better ones out there IMO.

  • Gotcha. Is white zin pink? Excuse my ignorance.

Haha I know! We were sort of in bumfuck nowhere and at least got to dress up and dance. The drinks were NOT the highlight.

  • I recently received a bottle of Menage a Trois--California Red.  It's a mixture of three different wines (hence the name).  Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.  It's amazing.

    I agree!  That's a VERY good not-so-expensive red wine!

  • Hmm, I'll definitely have to try a late harvest wine. See, this is why I decided to ask you lovely ladies! I think I might get a late harvest to share with my friend. At least that way I get to try it too!

Oh, and Irish... WOW at those drinking choices. Just wow. Was the dressing up and dancing fun at least?

I tend to sway towards sweet wines (since that is what a majority of the local wines are) and I really enjoyed the California Red.  It was the perfect combination.

I do have two bottles of Fish Eye sitting on my dresser that I won at a bridal show.  Has anyone tried Fish Eye before?

LoL jk. Ice Wine is where it's at but I haven't seen it less than $50 a bottle which is half a liter I believe. As far as I know Moscato is the sweetest (besides Ice Wine) so if she doesn't like it she may be SOL on wine.

I have tried it and really liked it.  Also,  Menage a Trois has a blend of whites which is really good to.  There is a winery from North Carolina called Duplin Winery and most of their stuff that I have tried is semi sweet to sweet.  I am not sure they sale nation wide but it is a good cheaper wine.
