How much time did you take off work?

I'm curious how much time everyone did or will take off work for their wedding.  I might ask for three weeks off, which is making me nervous.  I currently have over 5 weeks of vacation, I just feel awkward being gone that long.  Granted, our timeline is like this:

Week 1: travel to FI's home country (Canada), spend a few days with his friends/family, host his going away party
Week 2: drive back to my home town (4 day drive with stops), unpack/settle in, do last minute wedding things
Week 3: wedding/honeymoon in Vegas

Did anyone else take this much time off?  TIA :)

I took 2 weeks off. We drove to Vegas and back, stopped along the way, and made a kickin road trip out of it.

I am taking 2.5 weeks off of work, and I don't feel nervous at all!!! We are entitled to 5 weeks a year here in the UK so it is normal for people to take this much time off.

You are getting married! Enjoy your time off!

FI will be taking off 2 weeks.
I think you should take off as much time as you want! Especially if you have 5 weeks saved up. Besides, you only get married once!!!!

Ah, Europe is so much more liberal/awesome with vacation and holiday.  I wish we were like that.  :)

I also don't want to stress myself out with working in between the move (too much last minute planning stuff) or going back to work immediately after the wedding.  I get really stressed out after traveling - I'd like to have a few days to enjoy being home with my husband :)

Take 2 weeks and one day. Taking two days before vegas to get last minute packing done, in vegas for five days then off to honey money for six days then back home for three. Going back to work on a random Tuesday. I figured it be easier than Monday :)
  • edited December 2011
Right now I have  8.5 days scheduled off. I have a half day on Tuesday and I have the whole next week off too. I might cancel one or two days though, and go back to work on Thursday or Friday after the wedding.

Yeah, taking more than a week off at a time made me nervous too, so we're taking 6 or 7 days for the wedding itself in May then another week in September for our HM in Maui.  :)

This is the problem with our industry (retail in general)... apparently the world is going to catch fire if we're not available 24/7.  So I've grown accustomed to apologizing when asking for time off.  I hate that, especially since I'm such a big fan of vacation days :)

Thanks, ladies, you've been very helpful!!

We took off 8 days.  We also didn't go on a honeymoon, we just didn't have the vacation time to do it.  But our one year 2 weeks on holiday for sure.

Funny that this topic has been mentioned because I just asked my supervisor if I can take off 2 weeks for the HM and a couple days before our Saturday wedding and it was OK'd.  Laughing

I just have to make sure the FI's boss is OK with this much time.  I think he'll be fine considering it is our wedding/HM.  Smile

We took a little over two weeks off.  Got to Vegas a week & a day before the wedding and then hung out in Vegas the whole week after the wedding.  No honeymoon for us either, we'll be taking a 1 year anniversary trip which will also hopefully be two weeks.  We both have a ton of vacation time saved up, even with our upcoming 10 day Vegas trip in October.

I am only taking off 5 days, Thursday till Monday. Going Back to work Tuesday. The honeymoon will more than likely be the next month where I plan to take off 2 weeks. I have never taken off that much time at one time before.

The last time I took two weeks off I gave my manager almost three years notice.

Since then I have never taken off more than 5 working days off in a row.

LOL - we have definite off-seasons where I work, so that's when everyone is expected to take vacations.  We don't holidays off though.  In the 11 years I've worked here, I've never been able to go home for Christmas.

I plan to talk to my boss about it in the next two weeks.  I just started a new position at my company, otherwise I probably would have put it out there sooner.  He knows it's coming - we just haven't discussed specifics.

I can't imagine taking that much time off again (unless, perhaps, I was going to Europe).

That is frustrating!!  My company only gets the 6 major holidays off (New Year's, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas).  Whenever I talk to my Mom, she's shocked that I don't have ::insert random holiday:: off.

I'm always mad I don't get Veteran's Day off, I guess I got used to having that off down in Washington and apparently Alaska just doesn't recognize it cause no one gets it off up here. I guess I can't complain too much though cause we do get 12 paid holidays a year.

I'm taking 2 and a 1/2 weeks off, one week for vegas and one week for our honeymoon cruise.  I conveniently planned our wedding right after our 3 week Christmas shut down (I work at a university so for those 3 weeks work is optional) I do feel a little bad for bailing right at the beginning of the spring semester but having 5 weeks off sounds awesome, I probably wont be able to do this again til I spit a kid out.

I don't know any non-government workers that have Veteran's Day off.  We get 6, I think.

When I applied to my MBA program I told my boss that in my final year I would be doing a project with an overseas company and would require 2 weeks off at that time.  I think that was fall 1999 and I took my trip in November 2002.

We do Europe every other year in a week.  We fly out Friday evening and then back two Sundays later.

We go to Canada for Christmas sometimes but I have to take vacation days to go.  One time my agency forced us to take 3 days of vacation.  I didn't have anything to do so I was mad that I had those days off.  I would have rather taken then and went on a real vacation.

We didn't take our honeymoon because H ran out of vacation time. We are doing that in a month and a half though. Take the time and don't feel bad. Its your wedding

I have off Wed 10/12 thru Tues 10/17. We leave after work on Tues 10/11 to head to Vegas and we're driving home Monday night. I have to been in school Tuesday morning (Midterms!!)

Relating to the other conversation. My job requires us to be available every single holiday. We only close 1 day a year in December (usually the 2nd Tuesday) for the employee party. You're not allowed to request holidays off and they are given off by seniority. Lucky for me, both FI & I have been with the company for 12 1/2 years. He can schedule himself off b/c he's a manager and I'm in the top 10 senior employees (#6 actually!) so I can pretty much take off any holiday I want. We're required to sign up to work either Xmas eve or Xmas day. I take off Xmas eve (FI's family celebrates that day) and for the past couple years, been called Xmas morning and told I can take the day off (Which is good b/c Puerto Ricans know how to party, and I gotta recover)

I think we could make a European trip a week long, but I wouldn't plan to visit very many places.  We both want to spend at least a week in Italy, a week in France, etc.

I am taking a week off in February for Mexico (see Diamond's HI thread) and then a week in July for FSIL's wedding and a week at the cottage.  I am not deprived.  At all.
