as i have been whining about, we are spending the weekend with the inlaws. there is at least one trip to a seafood restaurant planned, and ideally more.

dh and i have a pair of seafood scissors. i suggested we bring them and offer them to sil and bil, in case the kids want them or if it will make it easier to open crab legs for the kids. (there is one restaurant some of us want to go to, and it does not do scissors -- it is mallets only.)

dh said that it was presumptuous and insulting to sil and bil's parenting. i feel it is merely helping, and if they don't want them, i will use them.

am i in the wrong here?

if you're going to use them anyways, i don't see any issue with offering them to BIL and SIL for the kids to use too.

I would not bring my own utensils to a restaurant. I also don't see why you need anything more than a mallet and a semi-sharp knife to open crabs legs.

But I don't think offering is at all a commentary on their parenting

I'm talking about a step above a butter knife. I've been eating crabs that way since I was 4 or 5. You're more likely to cut yourself on the pointy ends of the shell than you are on the knife.

If the kids are too young to be handling the utensils than someone should be picking the crabs for them. In that case, the scissors are a moo point.

Last time DH had crab legs in Atlantic City he sliced his finger open on the shell. I think he would have loved to have scissors or his claw breakers at that point.

i don't eat seafood, but he let me try cleaning a leg and claw for him once - it took me like 15 minutes to get all of the meat out. Scissors would have been way easier.

I say bring them. It's not a big deal.

And I don't think mallets and knives should be given to children under the age of 8-10.

Bacon uses steak knives for regular food, but I wouldn't trust her opening up shellfish. I wouldn't trust ME opening up shellfish.

I still say bring the scissors. Mallets and knives sound like trouble; why wouldn't the restaurant convert to scissors?

the kids are 2 and 4. they would not be using the scissors; bil and sil would to make opening seafood faster and more efficient.

i imagine that the restaurant uses mallets because it's more fun and less expensive to replace.

Because a seafood restaurant serving crabs with scissors is like an Aian restaurant serving food with forks. Just because it's easier doesn't make it correct.

I also imagine that scissors would tend to crush the shells and send little shards into the meat. If you use your mallet and knife correctly this doesn't happen.
