Creative Ideas for a Honeymoon at Home?

Good morning!

FI and I decided to use our honeymoon savings to purchase a home, instead of taking a honeymoon somewhere out of the country.

We're getting married in Napa, and we'll be there a week early, so we'll do wine tastings and such, which will feel like a honeymoon, except that it will be before the wedding and a ton of OOT guests will be there too. Wink So... not at all like a honeymoon actually.

We live in north Florida and have a week off together after the wedding. We are trying to think of some ideas for how to spend that week - either at home, somewhere close, or both. We are already planning to take a 4 hour trip southwest to an awesome place on the gulf where I practically grew up, and stay for a couple of days, but we're trying to think of some other romantic things to do.

Any thoughts besides the standard Orlando theme park things, and the beach (which we'll probably do a lot of)? If you had to have a honeymoon where you live, what would you spend a week doing? I will probably post this on my local board as well, but I don't necessarily want specific details pertaining to where we live - more just general thoughts or suggestions.

And now for a poll!

What about Discovery Cove? My H and I did that while we were down there for our honyemoon. Or maybe just go to the keys and relax for a couple days whilst soaking up the sun on the beach?

PS I voted take the doggies! I can't imagine leaving my pup that long, but thats just me!
  • If I spent my honeymoon at home, I'd just schedule what restaurant was delivering on what day, and throw on a sweatshirt at those times to go to the door. :)
  • Stay at a bed & breakfast or a fancy hotel, get dressed up and go to a fancy restaurant and swanky bar one night, go to the spa and get massages, go do touristy stuff in your town that you wouldn't normally do like art museums, galleries, tours, etc.

I love those ideas! I didn't think about the massages, but that is a good idea for sure.

  • I like all of Dani's suggestions.  Unplug the phone and internet.  If you can find someone to come stay at your house for a night or two with the dogs, get a really nice hotel room.  Go out to dinner or order in every day.  I like the massage idea, too.

Since you live in Florida, I'd vote for Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But I'm a tinsy bit obsessed and trying to figure out a way to get there this summer.

Anyway, if I were in your situation, I would try to stay at one of the nicer hotels in town and make reservations for nice dinners and spa trips. Maybe do some sightseeing that is considered "touristy" but you haven't done.

  • I would just stay at home, and do everything like Dani suggested.  It would be nice to have time to do everything that the tourist come to do in your own town that you never seem to have the time to do.

  • Yeah, I like the no phone/internet thing, although it might kill FI.

We'd probably take the opportunity to go local places where we hadn't been before. Maybe camping... historic sites or museums? A few days at the beach in a nice B&B? I'd want to go somewhere like a battlefield or something, and FI would probably grumble. Or we could go on a road trip and look for crazy roadside attractions. A week is long enough to get pretty far in the United States - maybe you could think of some category of things in the southern states that you'd like to tour, and do that?

Love it. That's pretty much the only reason I would go to Florida.

Shannon, what kind of pklans do you have in Napa, if you don't mind sharing? (Or you can PM me.) We're going there for our honeymoon for 4 nights. We booked a B&B last week, and we're thinking about doing a hot air balloon ride, a tasting tour, of course, and visiting the tasting rooms downtown. The two wineries I want to go to are Mondavi and V. Sattui. Any suggestions?

  • Check out www.tripadvisor.com It's really for tourists, but I never go anywhere without checking out 'things to do section.' I've found some amazing things to do. Also, google atlas obscura, it's an online 'library' of esoteria and has some very interesting things such as a rock palace in the Keys.
  • Google private chefs in your area. A lot of them will come to your home complete with a china set and cook you an amazing meal based on a menu you choose together. It is beautiful. And you can even arrange for someone to come from a spa to give you guys amazing massages at home.
  • FI and I are homebodies so we like to stay home, it's our comfort zone. As far as honeymooning at home what could be more true to a honey moon that spending the week in the bedroom with the door barred or just christening every room in the house with your love? I think I'd also like to go out an eat at all those restaurants that we normally pass by because it's not in our budget to eat out, plus it means no dishes and more time for lovins. I'd also like to go on a picnic because they seem so romantic.
imageGraphics In a world of crazy we need as many hugs as we can get.
  • I'm not sure if I have any other suggestions, but I want to save this thread :) FI and I are moving to San Francisco right after the wedding, and if we can't save enough to go to Monterey and stay in a hotel, we might just stay in our new place and go around the city!

You guys are going to have a lovely honeymoon :)
  • If you live in North Florida have you considered Saint Augustine? DH and I originally planned a honeymoon there before his parents gifted us our honeymoon to Costa Rica. We spent a week in Saint Augustine a few months later and loved it so much we're going back for our first anniversary. The little B&Bs are so romantic and there are a lot of neat things to see and do in the country's oldest city :)
    That's Mrs.skWhitneyAmanda to you!
