Seems a bit slow today, so I thought I'd pep it up with another question for you ladies. So....

To date, what has been your biggest wedding planning challenge so far? Are you still dealing wtih it? And what did you do/ are you doing to resolve it?

I don't know if anyone is having this problem however the only issue is that I am having is getting some of my vendors to send contracts. I met with my catering manager did a tasting and picked out the food and I have not received the banquet event orders, and we Met up August 26th!  I am going to give her until Friday and If I don't hear back I will shoot her an email and see what the Hold up is.

I also met with the guitarist for our ceremony a few weeks ago and I am still waiting for the contract to secure the date so that I can sign and make a deposit. I don't know if people feel that its not until next May that they have plenty of time to send it, but its frustrating to me. Coming from the hospitality industry you should give your clients prompt service or they will go else where! So... sorry for the long post but that is  my only issue right now.

  • Trying to blend our cultures/ deal with FI's parent's opinions about how their culture/religion should be represented.

1.Honestly, I didn't want a wedding to begin with.  We're having a wedding because nobody in FI's family has ever had even a small wedding. Our guest list of 160 is considered small to them.

2.We settled on not hiring a religious leader for our ceremony, but hiring a celebrant who will incorporate both cultures and religions.

3.I am not wearing an Indian bridal outfit like FI's parents wanted, but I am going to wear the flower garland and the Indian bridal necklace for the ceremony.

4.Although we are not having a completely Indian dinner, we will have one Indian dish for dinner and Indian chai served before the ceremony.

Those have been our compromises with FI's parents.  It's been a challenge.

  • Dealing with my FMIL... it has been the worst thing ever. She is constantly nagging FI and I to do everything her way, which he tells her no. It's still annoying.

  • Probably getting the guest list sorted out and currently getting addresses from my parents and my FI/his parents. I'd like to get STDs out ASAP as they are ordered and sitting on a table at home. The guest list seems massive to me, but there isn't anyone to easily cut and there isn't a money need to more people.

Also, friend from high school offered to play our wedding (she's an amazing violinist!), but it's been really hard to get in contact with her, so I'm not sure if that's on or not.

Since those don't seem too bad, I guess I'm doing pretty well! They just seem sort of big to me.

  • Definitely the guest list. We wanted to keep in close(r) family and friends... around 150, and now we are up to like 185, and FMIL wants to add about 16 more on a "b" list, which I am not crazy about, but at least they are her people.
She knew we wanted to keep it "smaller", but it continued to grow. And she is paying for the vast majority of the recerption which is the reason I am keeping my mouth closed.
Other than that, things haven't been too bad so far.

  • The guest list ... I want to add more people and can't, we cannot afford it PERIOD. Even if 10 poeple don't show its still more than amount I originally wanted. I'm seriously hoping out of our 90 invited only 75 people show. Is that bad ....

You're not the only one. I'm still waiting on my hair and make-up lady to send a contract.
  • My mother trying to undermine all of my ideas has been my biggest challenge.  Well her doing that and wanting this to be the wedding she wants it to be.

Honestly?  I'm letting her have her way on some small things.  I've accepted she doesn't like most of my ideas and probably will never like them.  I mean she still refuses to say my dress is anything more than "nice".

  • Definately the guest list.

  • There are a couple of things that have been a challenge to me. Because I used to be "in the biz" I have this desire to go over the top with the wedding because its what I do best as if I'm hoping it will be published somewhere and I lose sight of the fact that Im not in the business anymore, so its really not that big of a deal.

I also find myself making decisions because something will look beautiful and will impress others and not because its something that we "need". Its quite a challenge for me and sometimes I have to just tell myself, "It will be okay if your buffet dinner does not include a menu at each seat. You dont NEED it." LOL

I guess my overall challenge is me not getting carried away.

  • Mine has been the hotel blocks.  There are no good options, which we realized when we booked the venue, but i didn't realize how annoying it would be! i finally (mostly) finished that part last week...its been kindof ongoing since August.  I'm waiting for the countersigned contract back though.

  • Definitely trying to make it what we want it to be while staying within a budget. That and this flipping guestlist that I swear will soon start to give me gray hairs...

  • I would say the bridesmaid dresses.  We are having a mismatched wedding, same color, similar length and fabric.  However, trying to get the girls to choose a style is hard.  At this point, I am asking them all to choose 2 styles and then we can narrow it down from there, there are alot of overlaps between who wants what, but nothing that all of them will agree upon.

Flowers are my issue right now. The woman who is doing them is going through some personal stuff and hasn't really been in contact. I understand this and I'm pretty laid back myself. I know she won't give away our date and isn't going to back out, but I'm ready to get some more info and do a contract and such.

I'm also procrastinating meeting with the minister at my parent's church who is doing the wedding, for several reasons, but I need to get that done.

  • Money! My parents have been struggling financially and have always said that they want to contribute, but we don't know how much. It keeps going back and forth as far as how much, so far FI and I will for sure be paying for at least half our wedding.

  • Getting my parents to just relax about everything and let us make the decisions around our wedding. FI and I are paying for about 90% of the wedding (my parents made contributions toward the dress and honeymoon; FI's parents will pick up the rehearsal dinner), but my mom thinks she needs to have a say in EVERYTHING. "Make sure you do this..." "Oh, it's not good if you do that..." "I really want you to..." UGH.

Just last week she was stressing about family and friends that both wanted to stay at their house (only 15 min from the venue), and how was she going to balance spending quality time with them, and that I had to make sure I was there to spend time with them, etc., etc. Um, Mom? They happen to be coming out for the wedding.. and they will understand if I am preoccupied with preparing for that. They'll even understand if my sister is (my MOH). And for that matter, if you are! CHILL OUT!

There is a reason I told my bff that the only present I want for my wedding is for her to keep Mom under control. ;)

(I love my mom, truly, but she can be nutso at times!)
