Am I the crazy one here?

I'm doing the whole new doc thing and both new places have said to call my current providers to request the records be sent.  When I call the old providers they say to fill out the forms when I get to my appt at the new places.  Wouldn't the new place want the records FOR the appt?  I don't expect them to review the files before the appt, but shouldn't the new docs be able to at least access that info?

Re: Am I the crazy one here?

  • You're not crazy.

Your current docs should also want you to sign HIPAA forms so they can release the info to the new docs. Usually, they want that done in their own office (giving them permission to send) vs. in the new doc's office (giving new doc permission to receive).

You should also be allowed to walk in and get your entire file. Usually for a fee (one doc here wants $1 per page).

I'd definitely ask again. Sounds weird.

  • You are not crazy.

I would call old office and request a copy of your records.  Inform them that you will be stopping by to pick them up in person.  Then you pay them whatever fee (if any) they will charge.  You can then share these records with your new providers, no release form would be necessary.

  • They said I could come in and sign the papers to have them sent for free.  They just acted like I was whacky for wanting to do that ahead of the appt.

Most people just wouldn't be as organized and proactive as you are being!

  • You should be able to access your medical records whenever you want. DG is correct about the form and they will charge you for your own copy, but should tranfer them to a new doc for free.

  • You have 2 options:  ask old doctor's office to refer.  That way they can send all records w/out you having to sign anything.  Or you can ask for them and sign form to have them given to you and take them to the new physician.

We have this problem all the time.  And honestly, this problem happens all the time.  I don't know if it's pure laziness or what.
