SO: Does an actor's off-screen life affect your enjoyment of his work?

Okay, so this is a waaaaay off spin-off, but in the HaHa thread a poster mentioned seeing Braveheart again. I can't watch anything with Mel Gibson in it anymore - it's been completely tainted for me.

Same with Woody Allen - he just seems gross and wretched to me now. For the longest time, watching Seinfeld was kind of ruined when Michael Richards came on.

I try to separate the person from the his work, but it's hard for me to do. This can be anything from no longer enjoying Braveheart to eschewing Wagner for his anti-semitism.

What do y'all think?

Re: SO: Does an actor's off-screen life affect your enjoyment of his work?

  • Sadly, yes. I love all of Tom Cruise's movies but I cant stand him.

Same for Angelina Jolie, she's a good actress, but damn does she rub me the wrong way.

  • Well, I watched Lethal Weapon 2 a couple of weeks ago, and I cracked up all the way through it, so, I guess not. :)

But, I haven't been able to watch anything of Tom Cruise's stuff since he turned into super crazy man.

I thought this post was going to be a spin off of the story that Mel Gibson has a cameo in the Hangover 2 and some of the crew members walked off the set.

  • I used to not dig Alec Baldwin for his political views, but I love him on 30 Rock now. So, I guess I don't know.

I don't like Angelina Jolie, but her personal life aside, I just don't think she's that great. She kind of seems the same to me in all her movies.

  • Sometimes yes and sometimes no. It depends on the person.

I won't watch anything Tom Cruise on principal, because he drives me up the flaming wall. But I will watch...I don't know... Twilight for example, where I think KS can't act her way out of a tin can and is a childish emo in real life but I MUST watch regardless. KWIM?

  • Nope. It really doesn't at all. Or at least it hasn't yet. If Mel Gibson was in a new movie, I might think twice about going to the theatre or buying it on DVD only because I don't want to add to the revenue he would be generating, but if I already own Lethel Weapon, I'm not going to NOT watch it or enjoy it anymore.

    agreed!

  • I think that I can still watch them, although not sure if I want to see the movie. Tom Cruise is a good example. He's just weird.

The other day the Parent Trap was on and I was all "Awww, Lindsay Lohan before she went to rehab 10 billion times".

(I was also sad to see Natasha Richardson. That was tragic.)
  • I feel that way about John Stamos now, unfortunately.

It depends on the person, though, kinda. Like, I can get past Roman Polanski's personal life because I like his films so much.

  • I think it depends on what the actor did. I mean, they are human so I can forgive mistakes and 'bad moments'. I never find a racist forgivable...

Like, with Michael Richards... I hate the N word with a passion, but I feel like it was poor lack of judgment and not racism that drove him. Because he apologized then laid low, instead of continuing to crash and burn, I can take his apology seriously and move on. I was never a big fan of his to begin with, so it makes sense that his "joke" wasn't funny.
As for Mel... I find it hard to forgive Mel Gibson because he blamed his tirade on alcohol instead of taking responsibility for his own actions. Then, he did it again, so I can't take his apology seriously. He makes me sick and watching him makes me want to smack little puppies.
Same with Lindsay Lohan. Now when I watch a movie of her I think, "train wreck!" and can never take her work seriously.

  • Well, I don't know. I have never been a huge Angelina fan. I would watch her stuff. Now, I refuse to pay to go see her movies. I will watch them, I just won't pay. TEAM JEN!

I still watch Jerry Maguire, Top Gun and Cocktail. And I think Tom Cruise is a nutbar.

So I think it depends on their "offence".

I agree. For awhile it was hard for me to watch Mel Gibson, but it's getting easier. It still sucks that he's kind of a douchnozzle IRL because he's an amazing actor. It's really hard for me to watch a Tom Cruise movie and not snicker a little because I know he's BSC.

And I agree TR on the dead actor thing. I see Britney Murphy movies all the time and it makes me sad. :(

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: SO: Does an actor's off-screen life affect your enjoyment of his work? : Yes, for some reason it makes me really upset to see actors who have died. Especially young ones. Heath Ledger's another one, A Knight's Tale was on TV the other day and it gave me the sads.

I know! So sad. That one was such a shock.
  • 100%. I can't take anything Mel Gibson does seriously. Tom Cruise has mostly been ruined for me as well.

  • It probably should more than it does. And a lot of it depends on when I found out and how I felt about them before. For example, I've never particularly cared for Woody Allen.

I always liked Mel Gibson and while I haven't actually seen anything with him in it for ages, I'd probably still think his old movies are funny, while I wouldn't go out of my way to see his new stuff, if that makes sense.

  • I will always love Braveheart. And the Lethan Weapons, and even the Mad Maxes. As much as I hate who Mel Gibson has turned into, it doesn't change how I feel about those movies. I also love Apocolypo event hough he produced it.

I refuse to watch any movie with Tracey Morgan, which sucks because I kind of want to see Copout withsince I like Bruce Willis. Maybe if I don't have to pay to see it I'll watch it, although I still really, really hate Morgan.

  • They should make a movie with Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, and Lindsey Lohan. I wonder if it would even make it to post-production.

[QUOTE]We were just talking about this last night. We were watching Two and a Half Men and Charlie Sheen is so funny, but I remember commenting it's too bad his personal life is such a wreck. That doesn't make me stop watching the show though. I do have a hard time watching anything with Lindsey Lohan post Mean Girls, because she really truly has thrown her life down the drain (and doesn't realize it, which is saddest of all). I've never been a super big fan of Tom Cruise so I don't watch his stuff, but I think he's a total tool. I agree with PPs in that I'll watch old Mel Gibson stuff, but won't put a penny towards anything new he makes.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: SO: Does an actor's off-screen life affect your enjoyment of his work? : I saw Tracey Morgan do stand up a long time ago and never wanted to see him in anything else after that. I'm definitely no prude and I have a mouth like a sailor, and his show made me want to jam bars of soap in my ears.

Same here. It was the most revolting and degrading "comedy" I've ever heard. He was at my college and by the time he was done more than half the arena had walked out. I stayed only because my friend insisted. I definitely can handle raunchy jokes, but he was just disgusting.

He also kept stopping to yell out at people who were leaving, calling them all sorts of names. As it turns out, he was totally wasted the entire time and ended up cussing out our media relations president. The school issued an apology for his act. It's a good thing John Heffron went first, otherwise he wouldn't have had an audience.
  • I cannot watch anything with Tom Cruise in it. Mainly because he has always struck me as being kind of a smug, pompous ass, and has become even worse since his Scientology kick.
