a little upset

I posted a question on the budget board about finding an amature photographer and they moved my post to  a local board.
I could be wrong, but I dont think as many ladies read the local boards as the others.
I just wanted ideas of where/how to find an amature that wont charge a bundle or make us buy a book.
We have a university in the area, but I don't even know how to go about looking for someone there.
any suggestions would be appreciated - as long as they don't move this post too.

Re: a little upset

  • I know what you mean, my local boards are never very helpful and not talkative at all.  I actually found a lot of photographers listed on craigslist.  A lot had websites listed and seemed quite professional (and some seemed really sketchy, too)  The one I contacted is meeting FI and me and says she'll give me references of past brides.  So we'll see.  I've also heard of girls posting on craigslist that they want a photog and what they are willing to pay.

Alternatively, going the university route, I'd go to the university website and find a professor in the photography department, and maybe send them an email or give them a call and ask if the could recomment some students.  Never hurts to ask!  HTH
  • Thanks, I actually just went to craigslist for the first time ever to post an add - I sure hope it helps!

  • Keep in mind these boards are international.  So if you post on an international board, you're not getting answers based on your area.  Your local board may not be very active, but that's really where a question like yours on the photographer really belongs.
  • I live in California.  I read the budget board regularly, but I'm not going to be able to recommend vendors to you in New Mexico.  Same with most of the other posters.  You can certainly look through some past posts on the board for some general advice as to finding a good photographer in your budget, but an international board isn't going to be able to recommend specifics.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I highly recommend Craigslist. That's where we found our awesome photographer. Actually two of them, as they are sisters in a business. I didn't even place an ad, I just looked at ads that had been placed.

I can't help you find a photographer in New Mexico, I'm in Florida. All I can suggest is try google, facebook, craigslist, local newspapers classifieds, etc.

  • Posts like that get moved because they're location specific.  I have never been to New Mexico.  Even if your local board is slow, people sometimes pop out of the woodworks to recommend vendors - that's how my local is, anyhow.  But really, you're more likely to find people who know of local vendors on your local board than an international board.

If you're asking for information on what types of sites to go to in order to find an amateur photographer, what questions to ask the photographer, negotiating prices, and what kind of experiences other knotties have had using an amateur photographer, the international boards might be appropriate and you'll probably get some helpful answers.

Look at craigslist, ask teachers for a local photography program about promising students who are interested in weddings, ask professional photographers if they have an assistant who does side work or know someone just starting out who might be in your price range, look at reviews on weddingwire.com.
  • Just be careful how you phrase your question.
If you keep it general - asking what resources to use to look for a photographer, for example - there should be no reason to have it moved.
  • Thanks -
I did not want advice on photographers in New Mexico - --
I am in New Mexico and need advice on how to find an inexpensive photographer.

A special thanks to all the ladies who directed me to criagslist. I had never used it before, a litte scared I guess, but I posted an ad and several people got back to me already.

Again, thanks to the budget ladies for helping out!

  • I have been crazy looking for venues. It has led me across the weirdest path of actually stumbling across photographers after googling images of the venue. I usually end up at their flickr or picasa site. This could find you multiple photographers that already know the best pictures at your venue to get bids from.

ALSO - another thing I have noticed is you want to make sure the times they are planning on being there (while you are getting ready?) and do you have the rights to the photos? My photographer will give me the rights to all my photos and digital copies on a DVD. Some photographers limit you to 500 pictures or 750 picture based on how much you pay.

As with anything I think it is just nitty gritty research. Good luck!
