Mary Ann at Ha'awina Farms

Does anyone who has used Mary Ann Bateman at Ha'awina Farms for bouquets and/or centerpieces have pictures of them? I have been in communication with her regarding leis, centerpieces and bouquets, but she doesn't have pics of anything else other than her leis- which are gorgeous. Her prices for bouquest and centerpieces are fantastic, but I want to see what I would be getting.

Thanks!

Re: Mary Ann at Ha'awina Farms

  • I was thinking of using her too but we don't have a final count yet and I really wanted to make sure I knew what I wanted. Kimmy is using her and I am pretty sure she will have pictures when she returns. I can't wait to see the pics either if anyone else has some.

I hired Mary Ann to make 60+ leis and my bouquet for my wedding. I think I only gave her a few weeks notice, and we didn't actually talk about what I wanted specifically until the week before the wedding. Her service, prices, and work are AMAZING. She is so nice and helpful - she was probably my favorite vendor (maybe tied with the Tahitian entertainment). I've tagged her work in several of my photos on facebook, which means that if you're a friend with her on fb, you can see my photos.

    Here are a couple more:

My guests loved the leis, and commented that they added a lot to the ambience. For me, it was money well spent. For my bouquet, I specifically asked for something small that did not scream 'WEDDING' (so if my bouquet isn't your style, don't assume that she can't do something different). I did not have her do my centerpieces (I had fruit and candles, not flowers) but she does all of the flowers arrangements for Mama's Fish House, so she's clearly capable.

All that said, I don't think Mary Ann is like the other local wedding florists. I wouldn't even classify her as a wedding florist, which is probably why her prices aren't exhorbitant. If you are the type of bride that knows exactly what you want and needs someone who will order out-of-season blossoms from all around the world, she might not be your person. Mary Ann is, I think, a flower farmer with a great green thumb and good asethetic. And, she can offer what she offers (tropical beauty at a great price) if you give her the freedom to work with in-season blossoms that she has access to. In short, if you have a very specific vision, be sure to ask a lot of questions to make sure you'll be happy. If you'll be happy with some combination of tropical / beautiful / affordable, she's your lady.

Kimmy (married last weekend, I think) also used Mary Ann for leis, but she made her own bouquet, so she won't have examples.

All in all - a dozen thumbs up for Mary Ann from me, but if you've been dreaming of a very specific bouquet, she might not be the right person for you.
  • Pikakegirl, Thank you for your pictures. She asked me to call her and I haven't got around to it yet. I was a little concerned about the Bouquet as I also do not want something huge. The size of yours is perfect. I am not a flower person so I think I have procrastinated because I have no idea what I want. Thinking I would just call and say "my colors are orange and h. pink, can you work with that"? lol

Yes, she can totally work with that! If you are totally low key about the flowers, then no direction other than color and 'I don't want a huge bouquet' will be enough. If you want a little control, you can ask what will be in season around the time you will be there (and, by the way, you can plan your bouquet the month before - no need to have half a dozen exchanges over the course of a year if you don't have very strong ideas for your flowers) and you can google the images and say if you like or don't like the flowers. A lot of 'native' flowers are the heartier, succulent-type flowers, such as the various types of protea. They work well at Mama's Fish House where they serve in flower displays for a week, but they may not be your style for a wedding (they're not super delicate). Or, they may be exactly your style because they're true to the island asethetic!

Glad the photos were helpful. Again, I can't say enough great things about Mary Ann, I just know that so many brides are so particular about the flowers, that she might not be able to deliver for everyone.

Here's another photo of the bouquet - to give you a sense of its size - and a tip for all upcoming brides:

I'm holding my bouquet like a big dork because it was dripping water onto the front of my dress. The bouquet had been stored in a vase in the fridge for several hours prior to the wedding, and then I just picked it up when it was time to walk out. I should have taken it out of the water 5 minutes beforehand and wrapped it in a towel to suck out extra moisture. (But I also forgot to put on my earrings, so how would I possibly have remembered to dry the flower stems....) To be classified in the obvious stuff no one told me or that I didn't think of category.
  • Pikakegirl...Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses.
I just need to give her a call and see what she can do for me. I do know that I don't want really "tropical" flowers in terms of very bright colors. We are looking for mostly whites and greens.
What kinds of flowers were in your bouquet?
Part of me wants to use her because she works hard for her business, and also, because she can really help me save on the budget. Everything is so damn expensive in Maui!

FSForever, good luck in deciding! I'll keep you posted as to what I decide.

  • My bouquet was mostly gardenia, with a bit of baby's breath and the small red accent flowers (no idea what they were). We asked for the red because they matched something else in the wedding.
  • She is doing the flowers for my wedding in 2 days :) I have heard excellent things about her, I will be back with reviews next week!!!

I just got off the phone with MaryAnne and she was so sweet and helpful.
She gave me phenomenal pricing for lei's, napkin florals and bouquets.
April, she mentioned she had just delivered your bouquets- I would love to see pictures when you do your reviews. Hope you had a wonderful wedding! I haven't pulled the trigger on going for the bouquets until I see what we are going to get.
I am thinking of doing table length lei "garlands" in green and white orchds, we will have various heights of vases with floating candles. She gave me an incredible price and threw in delivery for free.
If anyone else has worked with her for bouquets, please let me know what you thought.

    Thanks!
