Should Mom make the cake?

My mom make wedding cakes.  I have no problems with having one of her cakes at my wedding.  I don't know though if I should ask her to or not.  I dont want to hear her complaiing about having to get up early to finish decorating or something along those lines but I also dont want to offend her by not asking.  It would save a lot of money but I feel like she has other things to be doing on those days.  On the flip side she would be kept busy with the cake which might be a good thing.  What is the general opinion and how should I bring it up to her?

I would tell her exactly what you told us here!! Maybe not about it being good to be keeping her busy though. ;)

Anyway, I would def leave it up to her! I would say that you would be honored if she did make your wedding cake, but on the other hand, a wedding is just as much for the families of the bride & groom as well, and you don't want her to feel obligated to make your cake... as you want her to be able to fully enjoy the day. So then you're really making it her decision- not yours. :)

However, think it over longer, and make sure it's fine with you if she doesn't make it. It's a very special thing if your Mom made the cake- and saves you a lot money.

Give her the choice,  Ask if she wants to make it and if not, ask her to recommend another baker.

If it were me I would love for my mom to do my cake. She would probably feel honored you asked her! Esp. if she does them for a living, she'd be able to make yours with care and it would be like a gift from her to you. ;)

Just ask her.  My MOH makes wedding cakes and insisted on making mine as her gift to us.  She made the cakes ahead of time and froze them, and then did all the putting together and decorating that week.  She had it done the day before and we dropped it off at our venue the day before so they could keep it in the fridge overnight.  Maybe your mom could get it done a few days early.  Once its frosted, and especially if it has fondant on it, it stay fresh.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  I'll be asking her over Thanksgiving!
