Plated Dessert vs Cake

Hi ladies, I'm a new poster to this board. I am seeking some feedback on doing a plated dessert vs having a wedding cake,

We are doing a classic 4 course meal and have 6 amazing desserts to choose from if we opt to do the plated dessert.

Will we shock guests if we don't have a cake? Will people appreciate a classic dessert vs a slice of hit or miss wedding cake?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

*EDIT* The plated dessert is already included in our package. For a cake, we'd have to purchase the cake and pay a $3 pp cutting fee. The desserts we can choose from are:

warm chocolate cake, fudge sauce, malted milk ice cream

lemon “meringue”, blueberry syrup, ginger ice cream

praline & caramel mille- feuille, banana ice cream

seasonal berry tart, brown sugar crème, balsamic reduction

neopolitan crème cake, vanilla sauce, strawberry ice cream

dark chocolate tart, cocoa nib tuile, mint julep ice cream

I think people will definitely appreciate the plated dessert. Dessert is dessert and I'm sure whatever you are going to pick will be yummy. What are you going to pick?!

I would love to be served a plated dessert at a wedding. Just be careful because a plated dessert can either look really nice or really sloppy.

    Can't you do both?

I'd personally prefer your option over traditional cake since I'm not a big cake person. You always hear about brides that have tons of leftover cake since guests simply can't finish it, so I think this would be a welcome change.

Are you doing a cake cutting if you opt for the plated dessert?  If so, I think it would be a little odd to cut the cake and then not serve your guests cake...unless you box it and have your guests take it home as favors.

If you're not doing a cake cutting, I would totally do a plated dessert!  I think it would be a fun, tasty, elegant alternative to wedding cake-- I'm not a big cake person though.  Personally, I'd want the mille feuille, but I know that a lot of people don't like banana in their dessert.  Otherwise, the berry tart or the Neopolitan cake--yum!

Yum, yum! They'd all be so good. I agree with Tea... about the Berry Tart or Neopolitan Cake. If you go with the Neopolitan, people get the taste of "cake", if that was a worry for you!

Well, I'm obviously in the minority, but when I go to a wedding, I want wedding cake.  So I would pick one of the cakes for dessert.

I would probably do the chocolate torte with mint julep ice cream. But I looove mint juleps!

We thought about holding ours at the Trump, since your venue has the best city view. It was a lot of more reasonable than I thought it would be. The only "whaaaa" moment I had was the cost of a late night snack. $35pp! For a slider and a cone of fries!

We ended up booking at the new The Elysian Hotel on Rush St.. But it was a HARD decision. The view is going to be incredible in all of your reception photos :)

I agree with PPs.  If you're going to do a cake cutting, you should serve the cake, even if it is in additon to dessert.  FWIW, we are serving a dessert duo followed by the cake afterward.  So our guests get 3 desserts :D

Plated dessert!!!! You don't need the wedding cake.

I'm a huge cake fan, so I would probably miss the wedding cake, but I'd be satisfied with a plated dessert.  Can you serve a medley of the options or do you have to pick one and that's it?  I know you can't please everyone, but with a cake, at least you can have different flavors so people can choose something they like.  If you choose only one dessert, there's a chance that a lot of people won't like it.

My FI and I also have a dessert course with our dinner, so we were kind of on the fence as well. I very much want a weddding cake though so we are choosing gelato as the dessert and having our cake also :)
However, if you don't have your heart set on a wedding cake I say go for the plated dessert, no need to spend the extra money on something you don't want.

We also have the plated dessert included in our menu so we chose to have a cheese (real cheese) cake as a wedding cake. We will have different kind of cheeses: Swedish, French, Swiss etc and have two tiara cakes. We will arrange them with decorated fruit and serve them with crackers and biscuits.

We will have a rather non-conventional wedding and we chose to have a travelling theme wedding so thus we chose the cheese wedding cake with cheeses from different countries etc.
