I need a second opinion, or maybe a third.

Through the referral of a friend I stumbled on a fantastic cake lady, her cakes are beautiful AND likely the most delicious cake known to mankind.

The best part was that she was insanely underpriced for the area and her skill level, at ~$1.50 per serving, that's something i'm thrilled to work with.

I spoke with her Sunday and we arranged to have a to-go-sample, my mom is visiting from out of state which only happens once a year and I want her to be involved in choosing even though we don't have to have it till next June (which the cake lady knows).

The cake lady and I arranged for the day i'm to pick up the samples through email, then the next day writes me an additional email with more detailed directions (she lives in the neighboring town) and at the end mentions that "[she] is going on hiatus, but it wont affect yous"

I looked on her page, and she announced that she is leaving the cake business for a while for family and personal reasons.

-I don't want to be insensitive and demand to know whether or not she will be making our cakes, but at the same time I don't know how long a hiatus will take?

I guess i'm just asking if I should wait it out, and start panicing by December-ish if I don't have someone in order?

The only reason i'm even concerned is because next June is INSANELY booked all over town, we got very lucky with our venue and the day we wanted - but I can only imagine bakeries will be equally booked around that time - I like to plan ahead.

I would ask her when you pick up your samples.

That is definitely my plan, I just didn't want to come off as inconsiderate or insensitive about it.

    I guess business is business.

Just tell her you saw the posting on her website and didn't want to put any extra stress on her situation or your situation.  You are having a June wedding, don't leave any bookings till last minute (by last minute I mean 6 months out because of the time of year you are having your wedding).  Here in Ohio, May - August book about 8 months out because that is when everyone wants their wedding.

Make sure if she says her hiatus won't affect your wedding date you get a contract now.  Then there is no changing of the mind.

Id think the part where she says that it wont affect you is a good indicator that she feels she will be able to take care of your cake. . definitly ask about it when you talk to her, but sounds as if you dont have anything to worry about
You can't argue with the universe..Well, you can, it just doesn't get you anywhere.

Def make sure that you will have a contract stating she is available!

I would assume that she is filling all existing contracted cakes, and not taking any more...and call her to confirm that!

I met with the cake lady today and spoke with her, turns out it's a health problem that's gettin' her down but she said she was going to take care of us so i'm relieved! We're doing our samples early because my mom is out of state, but i'll sign a contract with her later on this year to secure it. She gave us an entire sheet cake with 8 different flavors to try today, we took it with us so we could collaborate with both our moms on flavor, but she was SOO generous.

Everyone told me samples are supposed to be free but I felt bad walking out with a huge box of cake without paying her anything haha!

All that said i'm pretty sure we're set on flavors! We have FMIL left to sample but we're sure she'll agree, How exciting :] And i'm getting the grooms cake in the shape of a large 45lb plate weight (like for bodybuilding) since FI is super into that, he has nooo idea! I hope I can keep it a secret for another year!
